1995 Litespeed Ultimate. Stripped down, polished the frame, new decals. Currently in the middle of rebuilding with what I think of as an interim build, while I decide what it will Ultimately be.

My Domo Farm Frites Eddy Merckx MX Leader has had a few tweaks today, new brake and gear cables, some Merckx bottle cages, and I've changed tyres from 25c to these 28c Veloflex Corsa Evo's, which have made the already sublime ride extra plush which definitely helps float over London's crater filled moonscape roads. I love this bike.

I did a little work on the touring/commuting bike yesterday. Overhauled the Stronglight Delta headset, after about 3 years of neglect. The grease didn't look too bad, and the roller bearings are still in fine shape. The bike & headset have a bit over 50,000 miles (and 20 years) of use, and show no signs of wearing out.

Well, there is some wear where the o-ring seals rub against the mating aluminum parts. The grease attracts sand and grit, and this is what ends up abrading the aluminum. Doesn't seem to be a problem yet.

The Stronglight Delta has served me well. I've got an older bike with its original Stronglight Delta, and it has nearly 60k miles on it. It's hard for me to believe that these weren't more popular.

I was out the door to ride when I noticed a flat rear tire... sigh.
Brought it in, fixed it, and was hooking the straddle cable back up to the cantilever brakes when I noticed a pad dragging. The brakes are SunTour XC Pro's, which require the spring tension to be adjusted with a 13mm wrench. Carefully turning the wrench didn't seem to be increasing the tension, and I eventually realized that the spring had failed. <insert another sigh here>

okay, it was clear that the ride was cancelled, so the rest of the bike clothes come off.
Removing the brake arm and spring revealed that the bent end of the spring was no longer at a right angle to the coil. Instead, it was bent over and had pulled out of the mating hole.



There was a crack at the bend, which becomes visible upon closer inspection...







I had another one of these springs break in 2005, after only 5 years of use. This one failed after 22 years of use, so I guess that's not bad??

SunTour used a similar style of spring in their first generation SunTour Cyclone rear derailleur, and they also have been known to break at this sort of bend. I've had it happen twice, and have picked up spare derailleurs in order to have a source of replacement springs. Fortunately, I picked up a spare set of the XC Pro brakes after the first spring failure, so I'm prepared for two more springs to break. After that, I'm switching to the spare set of Shimano canti's that are also in the parts box.

Another non-bike related wrenching session....driving sim rig for my son (and me ) junkyard seat, and only about $25 worth of lumber. made it in 2 pieces so it'd fit through the door and i can move it around the house if needed)

Got the Moto in the stand last couple days. This was my first resto with a repaint a few years ago. Managed to break most of the original components during the tear down and have been sorting it out ever since.

Just finished up a Gitane Grand Sport Deluxe restoration. Had one in college many years ago that I'd bought new, then crashed beyond repair on campus. The frame is stamped 73 and that seems about right considering the decals and lettering.


The before picture. The white frame had been touched up with some white spray paint and the foil decals were pretty beat up. The light set will go to another bike.


Took it down to the bare frame and sprayed white pearl automotive paint on it.





Replaced the brake and extension levers with some Weinman levers and new hoods. The alloy wheels cleaned up nicely and have new Panaracer tires.

Although the old chain cleaned up nicely, I opted for a new chain. I miscalculated the length at first and had to put two links back to get the proper length.

The Simplex derailleurs were broken and I replaced them with a Suntour set. I kept the Stronglight cottered crank. Used my new Bikesmith cotter pin tool to remove and replace it.

The DiaCompe brakes work fine. Actually lots of life left in the old pads.

The seat was shot and I had a Terry Fly seat in my spares box. The 25mm alloy seat post is new.

I took some liberty with the location of the decals. Despite its name, the Grand Sports Deluxe model was the entry level of the line.


I particularly like the detail on the fork decal.

This: Serendipitous find couple months ago. It was devolving into a Frankenbike. Needed a thorough cleanup, replacements for broken parts, plus "old man" changes.

"73" on the upper head lug? That's probably the lug angle, not the manufacture date. But considering the components and other characteristics of the bike, it's probably not too far off the manufacture date.

Starting some tweaks on the Cresta GT that I got a couple of years ago. Needs a better saddle so I've been trying different ones; the Fujita Professional I had on my old Trek 510 is too hard on my out-of-shape butt so I dug out a Bontrager Titec, my preferred seat for mountain bikes, but before testing that out I dug out an old Ideale #6 (dame) that I've been meaning to try. I'm hoping its less severe shape will be easier on me as I get used to riding again.

Fortunately, I found a second 26.6 post so I can swap back and forth with the Titec to see which I prefer, and I hope that between those two I'll find one of them to be satisfactory. Hate to buy new bike parts.

I wanna build up this Alan from 1972 because of the 50th anniversary of Alan this year.
The Campa seatpost, a correct 25, is stuck in the frame and the seatlug has a very, very tiny haircrack, reason to act careful. I wanted to try this Brooks Professional, maybe it was the correct height and in that case no need getting the seatpost off. Because the seatpost was dismantled I had to use a donor seatpost, lots of rust and on one side a part of the saddle strap did not loose ...
Finally it succeeded. And the good news is, the saddle has the desired height.

Maybe apply penetrant sparingly, leave binder bolt a bit loose, ride very cautiously and see if it loosens up on its own from weight and vibration.

I thought I could share my restore process. I started cycling for real in San Francisco when it was my only form of transportation. I started doing "loops" in Marin, the South Bay, and Sonoma with a cool group of dudes. I do NOT have $200 to spare...Unless you have some good old Campy ***** for my Ciocc....
