Just for fun, I stuck a 27.5" front wheel into my old rigid 26er singlespeed (2004 Redline Monocog), which I still occasionally ride. It made the bike more comfortable and fun to ride, mostly because it raised the handlebars and slackened the head tube angle. I tried putting the same 27.5" wheel into another old 26er (which had an initially slacker headtube angle than the monocog) and it just made the bike handle like crap. So I guess it depends on the initial geometry of the bike....it could either improve the ride or make it worse.
For what its worth, the two wheelsizes are not very different and the bike looks OK with the slightly larger front wheel. Most people don't even notice my wheels are different sizes.

I had a friend who had to replace his shock with a longer one, and it made the bike handle horribly. I have had the tire radius change from 5-10mm without much of an issue, but I would be leery of going beyond that.
I do like the idea of a fat 27.5 in front and a skinnier faster 700c in the back - keeping relatively the same diameter.

My current ride 26 inch 1994 mongoose needed a new rigid fork as the suspension was shot the fork has huge clearance for 27.5 so I was thinking maybe but I have rim brakes and cannot up the tire size for brakes willl not work.....I was kinda psyched but you mention some good reasons why it may be a bust. Old school geo may make point mute......I do luve the bike fast smoove goes anywhere Tank but not tank in how it handles.
