Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

For a number of years, my company did paydays twice a month, which may sound good, because monthly bills like mortgage/rent and car payments are generally due on the same date every month, but in practice the timing varied a lot based on when weekends fell. This doesn't make a lot of sense, since most of the process is automated, and can take place in the middle of a Saturday night just as easily as between 9 and 5 on weekdays. It would cause weird gaps and such.

Now we're on biweekly, which of course doesn't coordinate with the days things are due, but the old system didn't either.

I question that, since once it's done it's done for the year. Not only that, I can copy and paste the functions from year to year so I only needed to make the spreadsheet once and from then on just copy pasta.

Most of my childhood friends' parents worked for DuPont. They got paid once a month. I don't know if they still do it that way.

Every payday's a party when you're 20.

I can't remember whether I ever worked someplace that paid in cash, or whether it was always by check. I'm thinking the latter, because I think I'd remember an envelope with coins in it.

Most car dealers I have worked for pay on the 1st and the 16th. An office manager one time discovered there was a legal leeway of 5 days, according to her, so checks started coming on the 6th and the 21st. This upset a lot of people.

Another office manager was mad at two technicians so he changed their withholding and they had to come up with thousands for the IRS at tax time. It happened to me by accident once at my last dealer and when I complained to the office manager she said "you have money, just pay it". It was $3500, a nice unexpected expense.

I worked at a used car lot in 1976, I think. $90 a week cash under the table and he made lunch every day. He gave me a raise to $100 eventually.

Hello? That's what I said to start the conversation. Why do you need to make two new sheets a year when the sunsets don't change?

My favorite bar in my 20s would cash my paychecks for me. This is a pretty bad idea for a young alcoholic also.

Rice cakes are really good if you smother them in chocolate syrup and put crushed nuts on top or so I've heard.

Having decided to take a week off to relax, after a very stressful Christmas break, and the HVAC guys FINALLY being done, I now find myself assaulted by what sounds like a tile or concrete saw next door.

Because the dates on which Wednesdays and Fridays fall change every year. Duh.

Our first apartment as newly-weds was near a GM plant. If I stopped at the liquor store on Friday night, there was a line. The store owner would cash pay checks, so the workers would stop on their way home, cash their checks, and pick up a case of beer and a fifth of Jack.
