For Merziac - Colin Laing Reynolds 753
Took a few phone snaps on today's ride. One of my more interesting bike rescues. Bought for the 8 speed DA groupset stuffed in a 126mm frame that was unridable. Groupset is as you see it other than new hoods and the 600 wheels as the rims had radial cracks, the DA hubs are good and I have some polished H Plus Son rims but have yet to order spokes so are running the 600 wheels. I could make out Colian and 753R decals in the bad paint, but that was the least of my worries. I had read the original Reynolds engineering report that 753 can not be cold set and figured frame was a loss but bought it anyway as I saw no dents.
Hung it upside down on stings and the fork twisted 20º to the NDS and the typical string test was way off. I clamped the fork on my cast iron table and straightened the offending fork blade only to have it pop back as soon as I mounted the saddle, did that twice. Having been a design engineer for a couple years right out of college I new a craftsman can take a OK design and make it sing so I took it to Andy Gilmour in Tucson; I am fortunate to have two of his customs. He assured me 753 can be cold set on his Marchetti and Lange tables and he was right. He knew Colin when he was in Tucson briefly and even had a stash of Colin's decals to apply after he painted it for me. I have several thousands of very pleasant miles on the bike and can ride it around the block hands free.
I love the saddle I bought in Adelaide, Australia, a Zimbale, I understand Korea but with Australian leather.
