Raleigh Twenty BB problem

I am trying to install a Phil Wood/Shimano UN72 BB in my Twenty. The Phil Wood retaining cup goes in nicely on the non-drive side. But on the drive side, I encounter great resistance as soon as the threads have engaged. I am tightening counterclockwise on the drive side. It feels like if I keep torqueing, damage will be done. On the non-drive side, the BB shell threads go all the way out to the edge, but on the drive side, the threads stop a mm or two short of the edge. If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate them. Thanks.

I'd take a metal brush and clean out the threads on the BB.

Thanks, I've read that thread and Sheldon's page. Already have the right Phil Wood cups and UN72 cartridge, just can't get the drive side cup to go in without what feels like overtorqueing.

This is the sentence I was try to make sense of: If you order a Phil bottom bracket for a Twenty, you should be careful to order a long-barrel bracket (made for a 71-75 mm BB shell), or tightening down the mounting rings may not be possible.

Did they send one cup with wrong threads? Place the old and new against each other to see if the thread pitch is the same.

I don't really need more evidence of my own stupidity, but that doesn't stop it from coming. Following Jur's suggestion (sort of, I don't have old cups to compare), I checked the thread pitch and found that the drive-side cup was identical in pitch to the non-drive-side cup. I tried it again, and whadda you know, it threaded right on. The next time and the next time, it didn't, but eventually I got the hang of it and was able to install the BB without further incident. Thanks to all, sorry to have wasted your time with my inexperience and poor mechanical abilities.
