OK, am getting closer to optimal southern WI gearing:
Installed an SR crankset on the Faema Merckx with 50/28 rings.
Which required a different bottom bracket.
And the FD dropped to fit the smaller big ring.
And some links removed from the chain.
And the rear axle moved to the back of the dropout so that the upper pulley wheel clears the 28tooth rear cog when in the 28T chainring.
And lots of cable adjustments on the stand to make to it index shift properly.
Then more fiddling during an actual 32 mile road test, during which it was determined that friction shifting must be utilized.
And I will prolly mess around with tooth counts on the freewheel before this is all over.

So, at the end of the day, have a low gear of 28/28 and a tall gear of 50/13.

All I can say is, you guys better be worth it!

By the way, @speedevil turned me on to a little jig called Wolftooth Road Trip, I think, and it drops that RD about 5/8" and makes a heeeuuuuuuuuuuuuge difference (Chris Farley RIP). On my 7700GS RD, it allows 11-32, whereas without it, terrible noise, just terrible.

It actually works on my 11-on-10 Shimano 11-34 cassette using an Ultegra "std" RD. Chain wrap can be an issue, but if it wraps the chain, the Road Trip will clear the cassette.

In case someone searches for it - it's a Roadlink, made by Wolftooth. @RobbieTunes was close on the name. Roadlink product page is here.

And I'm using one on a DA 7800 standard RD to clear a 30t rear cog. Works perfectly with a 50-39 up front and 12-30 in the back. Minimal sag in small-small but I don't use that combination anyway so it's not a problem that needs to be solved.

22t difference on the rings is still manageable? Curious what FD is used for this setup.

Speaking of- I have a wolftooth roadlink available to anyone that wants it. Used to use it on my gravel bike, but it just sits in one of my parts drawers now. Free to whomever needs it, just PM me and ill toss it in an envelope.
Since Robbie mentioned it in this thread and I hear SWWI has a hill or two, the roadlink may help someone get to that magical needed gearing ratio using their preferred components.

Surprisingly manageable. I expected that to be the pointy end of any shifting issues, but it works perfectly.
Can shift from 28 to 50 and back again from literally any combination of cog/chainring: big/big, big/small, small/big, small/small.
Not just on the stand, but out in the real world. Just got back from a 32 mile shakedown ride with hills and everything (except my legs) worked like a charm.

An even bigger surprise: FD is a Dura Ace 7400. Who knew?

No the DD never ventured this far southeast. It kind of reminds me of Shop Hill Road which the DD always liked to visit.

OK, time to let us know what bike you'll be RIDING at Coppi.

Nothing wrong with riding modern. Gearing and other advantages abound, somewhat.

I and the voices in my head will be on a Battaglin. Triple Campy. Test ride yesterday was good....
….HOWEVER....
The close gear ratios on the rear have me in a learning curve.
I'm used to an actual difference from each shift....not the maybe? with an 11-25 10sp
Methinks a primer on "how to shift your triple" is required.
Glad I have time to practice.

For this weekend's Century, basically the 4th in a row, (Giro Della Montagna, Saint Louis, MO)
back to the Wraith and her "Big Gear" stuff, full double front, 11-32 rear.

Can't say how much I like that gearing. OK, I just did.

So, tell us who yer dancin' with at Coppi, eh, mates?

I've been toying with the idea of bringing the Bob (which was brought up earlier) and switch out it's current NR setup with a triple front and a 2nd Gen Campag Rally RD I have in the bin paired with a 30t freewheel. I need to make a decision soon since I tend to be spotty at the last minute (remember my Colnago's front brake kerfluffle at the B&T? )

I do, and if you tried to ride that gearing at Coppi, well, that would be something. A lot of it is like B&T, just add some.

Maybe @ldmataya, @ChromeMolly, or @nomadmax can ride that stuff, and I've seen @iab and @hodgykins do it, but

RobbieTunes can't do that, for sure.
