I recently purchased and refreshed a 1999 Schwinn Peloton by changing out the cockpit and saddle with new parts to my liking. The entire bicycle is in excellent mechanical condition and with the rather soft Vittoria tires it came with the aluminum fork rides just as pleasantly as my older 531 forks do with Continental Gatorskins, so I plan to split the difference with some new GP 5000s! After a shakedown ride last weekend I got out today for a pleasant 22 miles and stopped at one of my favorite little canals out west of Visalia...

I sat listening to a multitude of sparrows chattering in a few gnarled oaks and black walnuts, until silence swept over the flock after a Cooper's hawk approached. At first it landed haphazardly in a bit of dry brush right under the bridge I was leaning over, and it did not notice me! It always astonishes to realize how promptly sparrows or other flocks of small birds are alerted to a predator's presence - as soon as one issues a single alarmed chirp all the rest go silent!

Cheers!

-Gregory

Not much riding recently for a variety of reasons, but got out before the next storm two days ago. One of my standard routes, riding through a nice road with big estates, vineyards, etc and I hear a high pitched engine whine on the road behind me. I expect to have one of those modded compact Japanese cars blow past me but not the case! He passed me very carefully. I was hoping to catch him (or her, but probably him) at a driveway or stop along the way because I was riding my white/blue Carrera and my Italia jersey. Would have made a good pic. I saw it again at stoplight going the other way on a busy road, so I waved and said a Viva Italia! to myself.

You're a hard man, Neal. No way I'd ever call 'a bit over freezing' "balmy".
It was 37 degrees (eff'n COLD!) outside when I started out this morning and rode down to Fall City in the Lower Valley and met up with some friends for a ride on a popular route known locally as the “Red Barn Loop”.

Snoqualmie. Who made up this name?! Amazing. Could be used for Scrabble - and then 3x word value. Sure win. On the other hand, we have a Grevelingenmeer over here (lake). And Wales has some famous names too...

For a couple weeks now I've been cavorting about in the PNW wilderness like this:

Visiting places like this:

Miraculously the February gloom lifted - and a blue sky signaled riding weather!

Off for a brisk 25 on the bike which closely matches my slowly-changing hair color:

The name is derived from the earliest people known to have settled in this area. The Snoqualmie Tribe of the Coast Salish Indians.

Nice Casati. I was offered this one a few weeks ago but it wasn't my size and the price wasn't in the ballpark.

That Casati looks awful familiar, maybe it was part of Andy K’s big haul a few years ago?

Today was a fantabulous day with sun, blue skies, upper 50’s (OK pipe down Californians) and even more wonderful as I was expecting wet cold weather all this week. One of the few pluses of a wet winter is the smoothing out of the gravel roads. Coulda rode ‘em on 20 mm 120 psi tires today. My route took me on Ridge Road, a gravel road that’s popular with runners and walkers, and these fellows were out soaking up the sun and watching the passers by. I stopped and visited a spell.

The sun put in an appearance yesterday, so I got a ride on the Paris-Sport taking a scenic way round to meet my wife when she finished work, and to get some off the beaten track Veloviewer squares on the way round.

Out of Weston by way of Bleadon Hill, across the Levels through Rooksbridge, Vole, and Mark, then over Tealham Moor, taking a track to get the first square, before climbing Mudgley Hill. The lane descending into Theale was covered in sheet ice, so I the sensible option and dismounted and walked down the verge. At the bottom a Post Office van went past heading upwards; he actually made it up, albeit with the back of the van slewing across the lane from one verge to the other - quite entertaining to watch.

A quick detour past Theale got another square, then through Panborough and Bleadney before crossing Knowle Moor to Easton. The route the followed the main road into Westbury-sub-Mendip, before the turn off for the final square, then through Draycott, into Cocklake, and into Cheddar where I picked up the Strawberry Line. I followed the Strawberry Line north through Axbridge, Shute Shelve Tunnel, Winscombe and Sandford to the end at Yatton, then followed the lanes through Kingston Seymour and into Clevedon in time to meet my wife, just as darkness was starting to fall.

A great afternoon cycling all round; not too much traffic, sun and blue skies, although the weather was quite cold. 0 degrees C at the start, and the car's thermometer was showing -1 by the time I got Clevedon; with the wind chill from the easterly wind it was probably a bit lower, especially on the higher ground.

The bikes not the lightest, but the sign was leaning before I stood the bike against it!

Tealham Moor Drive, Glastonbury Tor in the distance. Ice on the rhynes.

Looking across the moors from Mudgley Hill.

Thanks! Yes, you're right - the distances on the sign are in miles. The roadsigns are one of the few imperial measurements left over in Britain. Virtually all roadsigns - with the exception of a very few town centre signs which are marked in metres, and normally designed for pedestrians anyway - are in miles, speed limits and car speedos are marked in MPH. I suspect that during metrification HM Government looked at the cost of replacing what must be millions of signs and road markings and decided they could live with what we've got.

Almost everything else though is displayed and sold in metric quantities - petrol*, food, drink, textiles, etc. The other common exception to metric is pints in pubs, although buying alcohol anywhere else mean it's sold in litres or mL. If I buy a beer at the pub up the road it'll be a pint, but buying cider from the farm in the next village means buying it by the litre, and when I get it home I'll pour it into a pint glass. I'm sure it makes sense to someone...

The odd thing is that even after 40 odd years of metric (I went through school during metrification, and was taught to use both Imperial and metric) most British people still commonly use Imperial measurements in everyday life - ounces in cooking, pints after work, miles of driving, catching a 5 pound fish, etc. My kids were taught in metric but they understand how far a mile is, how long a yard stick is, how much a stone is. I think it's probably because Imperial measurements are more natural and embedded in the language.

Sorry, this has been a bit of a topic diversion and a ramble, but it has made me think about our measurements.

*As a further diversion and ramble I've just calculated that based on the current UK price a US Gallon of petrol would cost £4.55 or $6.30.

One other observation. On our trips to the UK, mostly in the south, I've notice a duality of terms with temperature. When discussing the weather many folks use Celsius for describing cold and Fahrenheit for describing hot. It occurred to me that those choices make the conditions sound more arduous and heroic. -15°C and 98°F sound better than their counterparts. I'm fine with that 😊. Just my style too.

A friend joined a program where he gets credits for bike commuting. The program director asked if he'd be interested in posting some pictures of his commute for her web page. So I became his official photographer, lol. Of course the wind was howling today and I was left under my own power to keep up with him. I questioned his choice for a bafang conversion. He gets 28 mph on level 5 of 9. I told him if he wanted to reach litespeed he'll have to ramp it up to 11...

Some cold snowy riding the past couple of days yesterday got up to Alama on the bike trail just a couple of pics of the bike barn in Alama.

Then today which was really cold and snowy couple of inches of fresh powder about 10 degrees but actually pretty nice no wind and fairly sunny. I really like the smooth feel of riding on just a couple of inches of untarnished fresh cold powder.

Went out last Sunday to bring some much needed encouragement to church members in the form of coffee beans, tea bags and cookies. And what better to do that with than with the Pashley classic 33? Ice was still on the roads...
