Actually yes. There was a dress code in the USCF days. As a racing cyclist you were representing the sport. Clean bike, neat appearance, white socks. I still think in those terms today. On and off the bike. Heck I'm a painting contractor. Clean white clothes, button down collar, and a clean shave is my daily look. If you want to dress like a clown...join the circus.

Sorry this 57 year old guy really doesn't give a **** what others think I look like. My ass is on a bike, riding, trying to maintain some sense of health and fitness as I progress in age and if the lycra assists in some form of comfort on my 40 - 50 - 60 mile rides, than so be it. So I guess if you don't like my Acid Green Felt bike with my neon green helmet ( you know to help people in cars maybe see me and not hit me) my black bib shorts and Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon jersey with matching socks, well I guess, again, I really don't care.
My Grateful Dead jersey and Pig Newton jersey would probably put you over the edge.
This type of condescending attitude towards what others are wearing can be one reason people do not take up cycling because they feel they are being judged by someone else because they have on a neon jersey or silly socks. Christ, lighten up a bit and honestly I am not sure who elected you the fashion police....

Wait, this isn't in the roadie or racing forum. I call a foul!
I get a kick of knowing that I'm wearing my purple commuter helmet with a look-around mirror as I'm dropping 90% of riders on my rides. I've had retrogrouchy bearded near-pensioners in khaki shorts and hiking shoes (or equivalent) drop me like a rock on their touring bikes. I rode a personal best 1700 miles last year (which is peanuts compared to what some people around here ride) wearing random sports clothes. I know someone with very expensive bikes and a full kit yet doesn't ride outside (trainer only).
I also see plenty of middle-aged men in full kit on rather expensive CF bikes with seats either too high or too low.
Point being, you are not your bike/kit/etc.
P.S. I also insist on wearing ankle-height non-cycling socks - the horror!

I like Multi colored
Flo socks, helmet, gloves with blinking lights
For me it’s not a fashion statement,
its that I’m being seen that’s important

My favorite outfit - Lightweight Magellan or Columbia shorts (the kind that double as a swimsuit), over a chamois if it's a long ride. UnderArmour or Nike muscle shirt, in a variety of colors from black to neon yellow. White sunglasses. Red or yellow gloves. Bright orange hat. And Teva sandals - my favorite pair has purple threading.
I'll await my fashion police ticket.

It is possible to dress in brightly colored gear and not look like a cartoon character.
Most overdo color for the sake of color and wind up looking silly.

I will not lighten up because I have been on that side of it. I have lost 150 lbs over the past four years and the biking is a large factor in that loss. So maybe the OP should lighten up a little bit before passing judgement on others.
Thank you you and enjoy your day.

Well if you're refusing to lighten up don't lecture others to do the same. You aren't in charge of anything here. All he's doing is talking about how ugly he thinks cycling gear has become, not peoples weight, and in many cases it's pretty ugly.

My response was for the OP as the premise of his post was that many cyclists are not dressing in a manner he deems appropriate and directed us to look in a mirror before we leave the house. My response was not directed at anyone but the OP as I have encountered this type of individual before when on a group ride or at an event and I find their commenting on others kits, socks, helmets whatever just to be down right snotty and pretentious and it hits a nerve with me.
That being said, wear what you want, ride what you want and enjoy it all and please be safe.
Thank you.

I looked in the mirror - This is what I saw:
All I can say is s w e e t . . .
OP: Lamenting about how other people dress is a pretty sure fast track to non relevant obscurity. This generation just doesn't care what you think. Maybe they still believe you can't build yourself up by tearing others down and are focussed on the positives of what they are actually "doing".
