This is a great thread! I've been thinking of making hoods for the GB Arret levers I have for my 1952 Rudge. They used half-hoods like Mavic BITD.

Since this thread came back up I will add some photos of what I did after reading this thread and others on this subject and getting lots of good ideas.
There was a lot of discussion about how to get a proper template but I found after just cutting an appropriate size rectangle out to the approximate and using moisten or wet leather I just formed and shaped as I went — cutting to final size as I went and never used a template at all other than the initial rectangle.
I am not quite finished as I plan to hand stamp my makers mark on each side out of the end of a copper tube for a circle and a “b” from an old metal type character.

Thanks for the reminder. Yes, burnishing the edges is on my list. A leather worker friend of mine showed me a wood burnisher he made that I need to make on my lathe. Simple to do and then you just rub the edges real fast. You know projects get put on hold and this is one of them as the bike it is for is all prepped for paint (by me) but waiting on crisp clear air this fall (I had it ready to this spring but too much pollen in the air).

I've done a little upholstery in the past. One thing you could do is to use rubber cement and secure some thin leather to the brake lever "housing". Pull them tight. wet it if need be. Once the leather is dry use the rubber to secure it (clamping it again). Trim the leather slightly smaller than what is needed.while still cemented to the levers. Once trimmed, remove the leather. makes holes for lacing. Use good upholstery thread and sew them on.
Just an idea or make a pattern from thin muslin.
