Advice on Certain Race
Ok I emailed this one organizer and never got a reply back. So i figure I post here in case someone could help me
categories for the Richmond Hill
Road Race
For the Category
Men 3/4 for the afternoon wave
74 mile
What level of ability would that be. Would level 1 be the most fastest riders?
What times and average speed should one have for each category
Would you think this event be open to anyone?\
I was thinking of going down from Canada here to race it. I am just amateur but wondering if i could sneak at least a CAT 3 or Cat 2 race for fun? etc
or this open to only elite people only?

Unless you have a Cat 1, 2, or 3 USAC license or some kind of reciprocity exists between USAC and Canada Cycling (whatever it is called), you'd likely have to race the 4/5.

Hi there would the OCA insurance I have with local cycling club work?
As well for this type of event. for the Masters and Cat 4/5 what type or riders would attend? would they be more less the beginner type? just looking to be challenged a bit, however at same time not get my ass whooped etc. so not sure how this type of event really works. What should i base average speed on
for example what would a Cat 2 and Cat 3 rider average speed be compared to Cat 4?

Average speed is a useless metric for just about everything other than a pan flat, windless time trial. Move on.

Do you have a Canadian racing license? If so, use the chart gsteinb posted. If not, you will need to purchase a one-day cat 5 USAC license at the event, and you will only be allowed to race in the cat 4/5 field. It will probably be a fast race given that it is the state championships. If you haven't been in a bike race before, you should expect it to be challenging. If it turns out not to be challenging, then you should do more bike races.

Ok thanks for the feedback. As for racing, done many club races and Time trials, several Mt Bike and Fat Bike events from Cheq 40 a few 100 miler mt bike events and Fat Bike Birkie.
So over 3 years now and improving abit, nothing earth shattering though, still very average. was just curious on those type of events i mentioned with licencing etc. just because its different but seems more serious.
I know i can race in masters i am over 35. So an idea.

How come they make it so difficult in events like this, with all the licensing rules etc? what really is the purpose of licensing?

Not that difficult. The system simply lets you race against riders of similar experience and ability.

oh Gotcha. So more less making someone race Cat 5. as first timer. makes everyone start at the bottom and move up ? i assume

Nice, so in other words, even if i raced the Cat 5 . there could be some really fast guys there as well? well trained. more less. so cat 5 isn't just some guy on a tricycle then lol
