Got the Blue Line group all cleaned up and I think they look awesome with the color scheme! Also removed a tiny spacer from the freewheel to eliminate the play. Turns out there is a pretty gnarly scrape on the front rim sidewall, maybe the reason the wheels were taken off the original bike and apparently just put up somewhere because they are otherwise flawless and the hubs spin like magic! So, working on some fine sanding to get that sorted.

Waited the longest time for the littlest part to finish this build lol: the Suntour chainstay clamp-on cable stop arrived yesterday! I could finally put a chain on, setup the derailleurs, and TAKE IT FOR A RIDE!

Verdict: it's awesome. Tires are a bit sluggish, but I wanted to make sure I had something tough enough for the awful streets and gravel roads around here and they'll be good for that. Everything thing else feels just right.

Hi, I wanted to post a photo of this Fuji. I believe the model is pretty rare since I have only seen one other Fuji Professional from this era. The ride is fantastic! Fuji conjured up some "special sauce" with this machine. The finish is a little beat up and it may require a paint job at some point. But for now it has a lot of "patina." Thanks for looking. Wow, that's gorgeous! The lugs are very distinct and ornate. The color scheme reminds me of the later Opus. Very cool with the grey chainrings, too. Would love to find one of those!

That is a bit of a rare bird! Yes, by the lug work it looks like a early Pro but the livery is strange. Also curious is the painted fork crown, usually that was the same color as the fork blades. Would it be possible to post a close up of that? Are their any decals remaining on the top tube?

Hi Scott,
Yes, the "Professional" decal is still (mostly) present on one side of the top tube. I believe the fork crown paint is original since it is such a good match to the head tube and seat tube panel (see attached photos). Also, the serial # is 75C50111.

I just got this finished today. Since it had been badly repainted once, and I didn't like the original black, I went with cobalt blue metallic Rustolium and a clear coat. I only got to ride to the corner and back to work out some adjustments, but am looking forward to a longer ride next weekend.

Here's my 1986 Fuji Opus III that I purchased more than a year ago from a fellow forums member. I hadn't the time until a month ago to clear coat the frame and fork to protect the decals. But I'm glad I did, and the faded colors of the decals started to brighten following application of the clear coat finish. I opted with MTB handlebars instead of dropouts because it's NYC and who bikes around the streets in dropouts anyway?

What I find even more interesting is the presence of the brazed-on top tube cable tunnels and brazed-on shift lever bosses. I've seen three confirmed Fuji Professional from early 1975 and none had these features.

Powdercoat and single-speed conversion done by previous owner, with big honkin' bars (Konas, I think they're the 48s, but nobody in the world seems to know how they're measured), TRP RRL-SR levers, Portland Design Works 700x30 fenders, which are a tiny bit of a bummer because they'll only take a 25 tire, but they're also really nice fenders, and I live in Eureka and don't have a car. Pedals were Eggbeater 3s, and she threw in a pair of MKS Sylvans, which I swapped.

Original parts are the Sugino RT crankset and 110 x 42T chainring, Dia-Compe 400 calipers, Sugino SP-KC seatpost, and Suntour LaPree shifters. (I think the shifters were not group-specific, they look like most PowerRatchet shifters I've seen, except the Superbe Pros.) I also got the original bar and stem, both Nittos. The B114 bars measure 40 cm outside at the ends... so likely 39s... on a 58 cm frame! What were they thinking??

Bar, stem, and rear wheel are going to the Eureka Bike Kitchen, where I volunteer.

I'm going to convert it back to geared drive, because I'm old and slow and terminally un-hip. Here's the plan:
Swap f/f wheel for a freewheel rear wheel at the co-op.
Freewheel: NIB 6-speed Suntour Pro Compe, 14-16-18-20-23-26 from my parts box. The catalog shows a Suntour Mighty-6 13-15-17-19-22-26 as stock.
Rear Derailleur: NIB 1980 Suntour Superbe, also from the parts box. I could use a 9-speed XTR shop take-off instead, but I don't have freewheels that need it, and I've I got the Superbe, and it's *****in', and I want to.
I've had both since about 2005, when the shop I worked at, Performance in La Mesa, CA, bought a shop in Chula Vista. We all descended on the place like a plague of frogs.

I'll run it as a 1x6 now, because I'm broke, but the longer-range plan is to add a 45T outer ring and a Suntour road front derailleur for a 45/42 half-step. Should be good to go for around here. Bonus is that if I need gears for a hilly ride, I can swap the 42T for a 33, and have a wide-range 1.5-step at the cost of less-convenient shifting.

Going to do the work tomorrow evening at the Kitchen.

A question for the Fuji experts: I have a new-to-me 1985 TS4 that I'm loving (and still sorting out), and one of the issues to sort out is a very slight indexing of the headset. I'm going to try going to loose-balls to see if that helps, but also want to start looking for a replacement.

Can anyone confirm that this will be the more Japanese (27.0 etc) sizing for these frames, and not the more conventional ISO (26.4 etc)?

Yep, serial # checked out on the Classic Fuji site, confirmed with the 85 catalog. Currently set up 1x6 with 42 front and 14-26 rear. Next will be a 45t chainring and front derailleur for a 7-8% half-step. I'm really digging the 16-18-20 in the middle of the block... great cruising gears. I added a Topeak rack trunk with zip out panniers for trips to the store.
