this is a recurring problem regardless of sub forum viewed. ads are fine except for political ads. we are reminded not to post political comments other than the p&r section yet this forum continues to allow political ads & suspiciously always from the same politician. it’s hypocritical & I’m really disappointed

I suspect that the forum has no control over what ads are presented. Get an ad blocker and Bob's your uncle. I use AdBlock Plus.

I'm not addressing the content of the ads or where they are located. I have no say over that.

I'm addressing that you're complaining about it in the wrong place. General Cycling is for cycling content not for complaining about something on the forum. That is what Forum Suggestions & User Assistance is for.

Please, in the future if you have a complaint about an ad, take a screen shot and get a link if you can.

okay, so you just want to complain, not help get rid of them. Noted in your permanent record. J/k. As far as you know.

IB (not the mods) has some control over the ads shown here. But it's not full control

not appreciated, duly noted. they know what is being displayed. & complaining about my complaint isn’t contributing anything, so back off

rumrunn6 Thank you for saying this.

I suggest you write to me when your vacation is over and you tell ME what ads you want. Then I will propose those ads to the rest of the membership to vote on. Fair?

I got a quite reasonable 2 year membership and the pop-up ads simply disappeared.

My impression is the sidebar ads are directly related to where I surf, so I don't think Bike Forums does anything other than allow those merchants or sites access to the Bike Forum side bar space. Example I recently was on Sweetwater (musical instrument seller) and on my next log in to Bike Forums, Sweetwater basses I'd looked at were on the side bar ads. I think each of us determine what ads are there. As far as political ads, @rumrunn6 I know you're pretty active in P&R, so maybe that's why you're seeing a political ad. I think we've all clicked on links from both the left & right wing sites that were part of someone's comment.

If someone would get us a screen shot, that would be great. Political ads slip through now and again and then get fixed, but only if someone helps us do it.

I don't doubt it has something to do with his browsing history, but I can't imagine he is particularly unique in that regard. There is a level of control of what gets shown here. It's just not perfect.

Personally, I think all internet sites should be a pay-per-view. The advertisement model is a cancer.

rumrunn, our ads keep the site free to use. I understand that people do not want to view ads for various reasons and that is why we have paid memberships. Regarding how/why those ads are posted (and how internet advertising works in general):

We have "direct fill", which is ad space that we sell directly to companies, generally on-topic for the site. Schwinn or Specialized, could be two examples..

Then we have 3rd party fill, which uses ad networks to auto-generate ads based on your demographic/browsing information. Sometimes, it makes sense, like if you went to the Indoor Cycling Forum, maybe you'd see an ad for Peloton or even LA Fitness, because they fit "indoor workout".

But you can also get ads based on your browsing off-site or the browsing of people similar to you. Maybe you read a story about "[politician] does dumb thing". That's now in your browsing data and some ads are more likely to appear simply because you have [politician]'s name in your browsing history. Or maybe you looked up things like "how to bake bread", "muffler prices", and "dress shoes". Totally innocuous by themselves. But if someone else looked up those same things and also goes on a lot of "[politician] is awesome" websites or Facebook groups, ad algorithms can lump you in with them.

We do not control any 3rd-party ads and have no input on how/why they appear. I think the only things that don't appear on BikeForums are pornography, alcohol & tobacco, and firearms from Google Ads (which is only one of our ad partners). However, if you don't want to buy a premium membership and don't want to see a particular ad anymore, you can usually find a neon blue button in one of the corners of the ad or at the bottom, click that, and select "Do Not Show Me This Ad".
