My new Roll rack arrived along with my new bag for on my rack. I went with the Rock Bros. truck bag. Really a nice bag with lots of room for when and if I needed. Installing the new rack took only a few minutes. The rack went on easily with no issues. After I installed the new rack and bag I installed my new Shimano Click R pedal along with some new Specialized Rime 1 shoes. Can't wait for some decent weather to take my Roll out for a spin. Now just need the sleet and ice to melt away.

My buddy finally got to ride his new Roll. He ended up finding a 2018 Elite just like mine but in the medium size he needed. We took are first ride of 2020 and got 24 miles in. What a great day. Looks like in the upcoming days we can get a few more nice days to ride in the mid 50's so I will take it as that's warm in PA for Feb. First ride I took with the new Roll rack and the Rock Brothers bag on and have to say I like both of them. Nice to have the extra storage if I need it and will come in handy for a few of are longer rides we have planned for this year.

Removed most of the red accessories from my Roll today . Went “ Back to Black “ with my new aged B-67 saddle . The red kinda clashed with the new saddle .

Specialized Roll vs Crossroads 1.0

Hello All! I’m investing in my first bike that will be used on paved trails that have some moderate hills. I currently ride a bike not my size and going up these hills are very difficult and also gives me neck pain. I’m debated between the roll and crossroads. Does anybody have any advise as to pros and cons of each? The crossroads seems a bit light- does that make it easier to get up those hills? Is the upright position any different between the two bikes? Thanks in advanced!!

Hi, and welcome!

I can’t give you any direct advise between the 2, but my wife test rode both, so I’ll try my best.

I have a Roll Elite, and it is super comfy. Seat is great and is very easy to ride. The pedal forward design does require a little bit more effort than my Sirrus does, but again, so comfy to cruise on. I cannot comment on hill climbing.

My wife test rode a number of bikes, and the Crossroads was the winner until we went back to the shop for a final ride and they had just assembled a Roll. She rode that, and said, no contest as far as comfort. The larger tires do make for a great ride. As comfort was her primary factor, it was an easy choice for her. We ride on paved surfaces.

So, they are both great bikes, but I encourage you to ride both and pick the one that fits you the best.

I hope this helps.

Is anyone using a narrower tire on their Roll. I know it's designed to be cushy and able to take away some bumps, but I've found that if I keep the pressure at the max, I ride a little faster. Don't get me wrong. Faster to me is 11 mph as compared to 9.

Thought about it , but never tried it . I’m thinking something around 2” .
I think the stock tires are supposed to be 2.3” but they are the biggest 2.3” I’ve ever seen.

So, Roll owners...how big are the Roll's tires, as installed on the rims? Are they really wider and/or taller than 2.3"? That's 58mm -- pretty big.

The only thing I can do is to give you my comparison as to how big the 650bx2.3” tires on my Roll, are compared to the 26x2.5” Maxxis Hookworms I have on my Hardrock and the 29x2.5” Maxxis Hookworms I have on my Rockhopper.
The tires on my Roll are as big as the 2.5” Hookworms . . I like big tires .

Going to start riding my Roll again this Wed as it will be the first time in about 9 months but now that I'm getting back on my diet and going to start riding a few times a week like I was doing. I really miss riding my Roll. In my area you can't even find a Roll let alone another other reasonably priced bike.

Roll so much that I just decided on a kit. Hope i made the right decision.

Planning on taking the Roll on a 45 mile ride in a couple of months. Wondering if the stock seat will become uncomfortable (too squishy) over a long ride. Anyone do any long rides with the stock seat?

Regarding tire width:

My primary bike is not a Roll, but a Spec Rockhopper modified for hybrid riding with an adjustable riser stem, to bring the bars up to a more comfortable height, and and extra set of rims with Panaracer Gravel Kings (700x43) (for pavement and gravel rides). My 2017 RH (stolen last summer) came equipped with 29 x 2.1" Spec Ground Control tires. They were great for trail riding, but still ok on pavement, which was fine for mixed surface rides.

When I (finally) got a replacement Rockhopper (2021 model), after waiting 6 mos, it came with Ground Controls, but 2.3", which are not so great on pavement. I found the .2" additional tire width made a huge difference in the amount of effort it takes to get down the road, whether it be on rock, gravel, dirt or pavement (I don't do any serious off-road technical riding), as well as adding to the total weight of the bike. As luck would have it, I still had the 2.1" Ground Control tires (GK were on the bike when it was stolen). I'm very happy with the 2.1" as well as new 700 x 38 Gravel Kings.(essentially 1.5" width).

I don't know what size tires the current model of Roll is spec'd with, but it seems most new bikes are built with wider tires than in the past. Fortunately we can pick and choose tire type/size within the constraints of the bike's geometry.
