Garmin Forerunner 945
Looking at the Garmin Forerunner 945 for monitor my overall performance while cycling. Any riders have insight with this model or the previous 935?

There’s not much of a difference. It will monitor oxygen saturation and give you heat acclimation. There’s a different algorithm for VO2 max, so it will drop a couple points when you first get it.
When I bought my 945, 935’s were going for $300 on eBay, and I was able to get the 945 for $380, so it was worth the $80 to upgrade for me. I’m more of a runner than a cyclist.

I use a Fenix watch. Like it very much. The screen is smaller than a normal bike computer, if you do other "sports" it's a good tradeoff. If you're only a cyclist it may not be. The Forerunner series has a quick release system that lets you mount it to your bars or stem while you ride, so you don't have to turn your wrist. It'll talk to a power meter, etc. I don't know about the FR specifically, but the Fenix series will do turn-by-turn on the bike, I'd expect the FR to be able to, too.

I use a 945 to record all my activities (I'm a triathlete) but I still use a 520 as well when cycling. I like having the screen up front to view all my metrics when riding. I don't have the 520 connected to my phone so it doesn't upload.

Unless you need music, garmin pay, or pulse ox, you would be better served with 935. Garmin's firmware is still not stable with the 945. Battery life on mine tanked down from 9 days to 3 days with the latest firmware.
By the way, did you check out the coros apex. It does not get much press but it is a great watch that supports power meters as well. It does not have the firstbeat metrics which I basically do not use.

I know that some people who use GPS watches set up a second Connect account, put the credentials into Garmin Express, and then it gets uploaded when you charge it (from the computer) and you have a backup, but it doesn't affect your stats. I'm not sure what the point of having two copies, but some people like that workflow.
