Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is this a good deal? Please help!

Hi friends, please follow the link below to give me your input on the bike I'm checking out tomorrow. I am new to the bike world and I am looking for a daily commuter (5 miles). I am hoping to build an interest in longer distance hauls, too. Is this a good deal?

(Since this is my first post, I'm not allowed to post the link, so I broke it up below)

If it fits you and is in reasonable working order, that actually seems extremely reasonable for the current inflated bicycle market. The biggest caveat is probably that, if you don't end up liking the downtube shifter arrangement, it'll be a bit annoying to resolve.

The "new tires" look like Kenda K35s. That's a strong indication that the bike is using 27" wheels. That wheel size hasn't been used on new bikes in a few decades, and the tire selection is certainly thinner than it was 30 years ago, but there are still some reasonably-decent options floating around (I'd recommend Panaracer Paselas if you eventually end up looking for a livelier tire).

That 3-pulley LePree rear derailleur has serious 1980s kitsch value, haha. They look a bit strange, but people who've used them say that they work well.
That poor pulley cage desperately needs to be wiped off, though. A bit of grime on the rear derailleur is mostly unavoidable when using oil-based lubricants, but the "chunky splatter buildup" aesthetic is just gross.
