Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I read about his death during lunch. His ultimate desire was to get high enough to determine for himself whether the earth is flat like he believed it is.

I'm just now reading a book by a man who is/was one of the so-called quants or quantitative financial analysts. https://www.amazon.com/Black-Swan-Im.../dp/081297381X Basically he is an applied mathematician and statistician and is quirky. I'm not sure I'll make it to the end of the book. A premise of his is that unexpected, sometimes catastrophic events occur, they are never foreseen by "experts" and experts are poor judges of potential future events due to flawed thinking.

I tend to agree with most of his thinking. For example, not one middle east expert, the talking heads we see on TV had a thing to say about the possibility of the Arab Spring or the civil preparedness people in Japan charged with readiness to withstand an above average tsunami or the engineers who located emergency generators for the Fukushima nuclear power plant on the ground floor. There is a lot to the book including his thoughts on the flawed thinking leading to bad responses to outlier events.

Darwinism has a funny way of affirming itself in these situations.

I am happy to announce that I have passed the "new year new me" phase of getting back on the bike. I got back on it in mid December. I had that pretty good high of doing well in the gravel event, but that has worn off pretty hard. But I do find myself now in the position of scheduling rides/trainer sessions with the presupposition that it is non-optional. I feel like I'm over the proverbial hump of introducing a new habit back into my life.

Oh and going to NYC and eating too much off all the wrong things has impeded my weight loss, but I did not have any net gain in poundage at the end of the week. This has made me very happy.

Yesterday I went food shopping on the bike. My second ride all year. Want to get back to commuting once it warms up some and (hopefully) dries out. I leave for Montana for two weeks of riding in fewer than 4 months.

I will admit she is true to breed with respect to independence, high intellect and no tolerance for anything she perceives as a threat. She loves people, even strangers, menaces squirrels and song birds and goes nuts when buzzards are about. Of the many dogs I have shared my life with, Daisy is unique and I cannot imagine a better companion.
She does sound like a peach! I love them even though like you say they have a reputation of being “strong willed” even though the one and only time we had one with us for a short time it wasn’t the case. I would seriously think about acquiring one if it wasn’t for my postage stamp of a plot of .13 acre.

more or less the same. Most are really working shepherd dogs and being decently cared for, almost as another member of the family. There are always exceptions though.

Yep, what he said. Companies won't be able to hit their "marks" if production is being halted or curtailed globally.

A huge run up in equity prices, based on not much and begging for a correction, and the COVID-19 epidemic threat to supply chains.
