Chain Size for Singlespeed

Hi,

I need to replace my chain on my singlespeed but I am confused on the sizing that I need (1/8 vs 3/32).

My drivetrain is the following:
  • Shimano MX30 16T
  • 144BCD 44T generic chain ring
My understanding is that the chain size should match the sizes of the freewheel and chain ring. Online, the MX30 says 3/32 but I have no idea about the chain ring and thus my confusion on which size to go with.

Thanks!

A 1/8" chain will work with either one. It's a measurement of the width/thickness of the chain/cogs, so a 1/8" chain is the wider of the two and will fit both. You could also measure (or possibly eyeball) the teeth on your chainring versus your freewheel -- if it's a 1/8" chainring, it will be thicker than the freewheel.

Yep. I usually just go 1/8 no matter what size the ring and cog are.

Its the thickness of the widest sprocket , you measure and go with it ,

But yes 4/32" is a safe buy ..4/32 is of course = to 1/8"

3/32" is now also Aka 5 to 8 speed derailleur chain ..
