Hi All
My 2017 frame is running Shimano Ultegra 6800 11 Speed at the minute.
Does this mean your stuck with using Shimano Ultegra Di2 6870?
Or
Can you drop Shimano Ultegra FC-R8000 / Shimano Ultegra Di2 R8050 on the bike?
My main concern is the rear mech. As the frame is setup for the 6800 (rear hanger wise).
As everything else seems pretty standard.

What are you trying to accomplish?

If you have an 11-speed Shimano system right now, and don't want to change the rear derailleur, then you should stay within the Shimano or Shimano-compatible 11-speed line of components (cassettes, chains, etc.).

If you want to change to electronic shifting, then you will be changing the shifters and the derailleurs. (And, of course, removing shift cabling and re-wiring those portions of the frame.) You can stick with conventional 11-speed cassettes and chains.

R8000 and 6800 components are completely interchangeable.

As long as you stay all mechanical or all Di2, you can run them in any combination you wish.

If your bike is running 6800 then it will also run R8000. Everything mounts the same.

Need to check that the frame was set up for di2 but if it's a 2017 with ultegra more than likely it should be also merlincycles out of uk has the older version think it's 6800 for under 900 bucks

I realize I’m bumping an old thread, but I have a 2015 Pinarello Marvel with mechanical Ultegra 6800 (rim brake if that makes any difference). There was a 6870 model when I bought the bike new many years ago and I’m now kicking myself for not just buying the 6870 model at the time. Anyhoo, I’ve toyed with the idea of going to 6870 and have found a few used sets online, but I’m wondering if I can go up 8050 or even Dura Ace 9070 (don’t need DA but will consider it if it can directly bolt on to my bike) without any issues.

I’m aware the cost of converting can be very high, but I’d try to put my 6800 on my wife’s 105 5800 Domane and then sell the 105 bits. I really, really love this bike and don’t have any plans/interest in getting a new road bike (searching for a new TT bike to replace the P3 I sold some time ago).

Can I go directly from 6800 to 8050 without drilling holes or making serious frame modifications or am I stuck going to 6870 only? Would like the 12th gear but it’s by no means necessary.

Again - I realize this is an old thread, but I very much appreciate your thoughts and guidance

Not sure about 12 spd in your post, as all of the parts you mention are 11 spd. 8050/9070 RD are drop in replacements for 6800 RD assuming the brifter
is Di2, and here a 6870 brifter would work fine or for that matter a 6770 Di2 brifter would work as well. If your hole drilling ref regards the placement of wiring,
that is a different matter entirely. Internal wiring is much cleaner than external and more tolerant of wire length discrepancies as dealing with a longer
than needed wire externally is always a kludge but independent of the 6870/8050/9870 decision. No holes needed for the RD/FD/brifter change themselves.

You need to run wires from the derailleurs to the battery, so holes are necessary.

But if the existing frame has internally routed shift cables, then the Di2 wiring to the derailleurs can be routed through the same holes in the frame, right?
