I just got my first set of 'expensive' tires - Compass/Rene Rat Trap Pass 26x2.3. They are very light - one ride so far - durability TBD.

This gets said a lot, but it's rarely quantified. What does "wears fast" mean? A wide tire with 3mm tread depth should be expected to last thousands and thousands of miles before it wears through or succumbs to sidewall injury.

Pacenti Pari-Motos have an even thinner tread, more like 2mm, but I have nearly 3000 miles on mine with plenty more to go.

I think the concern about Compass-style tires wearing out quickly is either overblown, or people's standards for tire life have increased quite a bit from the skinny-tire days.

That's good news for me. I would be thrilled if I got 3K out of a pair of compass tires.
