Can I fit a 12/30 rear cassette with shimano 105 5700?

Hi, I'm running 10 speed Shimano 105 5700. Right now I have an 11/28 and am thinking of ordering a 12/30. Will it fit with my rear derailleur cage? This is for a 2014 Caad10 105. Front Chainrings are 50/34

Would appreciate any advice before I spend some money. Thanks!

do you have a long or short cage rear derailleur?

If memory serves me correctly (and somebody correct me if I am wrong) the short cage had a max of 28t and long was 32t but I am sure people have made it work with other setups. You could also get a rear hanger extension to get a bigger gear out of short cage.

Hi sdmc530, thanks for the reply. I'm not sure on derailleur cage length-how would I check this?

You need to ID the RD first, what model it is, the model number will be stamped on he underside of the Parallelogram, this will be RD-5700, if this has an A after (i.e. RD-5700A), you have a later model RD, which these are designed for 11-30t cassettes out the box.

If your bike is stock, this will probably be a short cage model.

If you go to a LBS they would be able to ID this for confirmation.

what Jimc101 said, you can look on the backside it the PN will be stamped into the unit. Or ask your LBS they would be able to tell. If those don't work you can probably get the specs/dimensions and just measure it.

I didn't know about the 5700-a model....

Looks like it's RD-5701.

You're good to go.
Even the short cage will handle a 12-30T and be in "Shimano specs". Barely.

with a minimal difference up front (one is quite minimal ) a short cage & the right chain length can work together.. .

I went from a 28 to a 30t on my 2006 Roubaix with a 105 triple. Even though mine is a long cage, it was a little noisy until I put a Wolf Tooth Roadlink derailleur extender on it. All quiet now, took 5 minutes. It gives more clearance and a better chain angle from big gear to jockey wheel. Its partly an individual frame geometry issue, and may not be a problem for you, but it worked for me.

The long cage 5600 series rear derailleur will accept up to a 27 tooth rear cassette. I ran a 28t cassette with it for awhile, but it wasn't optimal; it took a lot of work on the B-screw to avoid the jockey wheel rubbing against the largest cog, and shifting wasn't great.

The long cage 5700 series rear derailleur will accept up to a 30 tooth rear cassette. I am currently using the 5700 series rear derailleur with a 12-30 in back, and 30/39/50 in front. It works really well.

Wow ! Didn't realise , the RD-5701 can only use up to 30T . I'm using a 11x34T cassette (10 spd) , with my RD-5701. Only needed a slight adjustment to the "B" screw. Crankset is 34/50.KB

Update: I did it and I like it. The 12-30 cassette works perfectly with my RD-5701. I've put about 200 miles on the bike in hilly conditions. On downhills I miss the 11 tooth but I'm finding myself in the 30 tooth on climbs above 10% grade. Thanks for the advice!
