I was being a little cautious (not something I'm known for, when gravity is to my advantage) on my 32mm tires; I was getting bounced around a bit. He was riding cushy on huge tires and a suspension fork.

Overall, I think 35mm tries would be the sweet spot for me, at a little over 200lbs these days, but I might ride my '72 Nishiki Semi-Pro, which is already comfortably shod with 38's.

For 95% of this ride, fat knobby tires is just way overkill, IMO.
Beautiful bike. Oh yeah, I wouldn't use knobbies but 26 x 1.75 road tires. Why not keep the 38c tires? They seem perfect for the job.

AAAaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh. The food. Glorious, best rest stop food EVER.

But don't let that video fool you. Sure, I get a little teary every time I watch it, and some of it was just like that. But this ride is HARD. You need BIG TIRES (or a big fluffy butt).
There are HILLS, especially on the way back (yeah, Nine Mile Hill is actually more than nine miles). And then there's the hail. Yes, hail. The wet kind.

Despite all that, I'd do this ride again in a heartbeat if Mrs. Doc hadn't threatened me with A Fate Worse Than Death if I did this AND Coppi this year, cuz two weekends in a row..
So, 2020. I'll be back.

Dave, the more I look at those Breton style jerseys..the more it grows on me. Especially the LS one. I didn't order one when I registered but how am having second thoughts. I assume the are wool. Are they? Who makes them? It would be pretty cool to have a long sleeved one.

Before reading this post, I had never heard of this event. But, if I were to describe the perfect ride, it would probably sound exactly like The Cino.

A vintage rando would be perfect for the Cino.

Woolistic makes the jersey and they are 100% wool. I know a long sleeve might seem hot to some, but I can actually use it in most weather, not just in cool weather. (But there’s an ultralight SS version for those who need it.) I love how wool breathes better than Lycra. I used both for a summer in Houston, TX and the wool won hands down. The Lycra had to be tossed because of the funk it acquired. In the world of bikes, steel is real; in the word of garments, wool is cool. (Ok, that’s the best rhyme I could come up with.)

But I digress. Message me and we can get a jersey worked out, I’ve already done it for one registrant.

Now if money were no object, I’d get the Saint James Matelot fisherman’s sweater. But at $225+... They made a groovy sweater for Velo Motors a while back, and were part of the inspiration for this version.

Yeah I can't do both this year because of work but I want to do this ride. Which size tires would you use? Gearing?

Maybe it's time to do a 650b conversion . . .

We were very comfortable on 650x38 this fall. I loved 34mm tubulars a few years ago.

Go as low as you can for gearing. I’ve done 42x26 before, but the hills were a killer. My wife gets by fine on 30x28 using a triplizer from Red Clover for her Stronglight 93 crank. Check her ‘73 Gitane in my sig.

I built Schwinderella with Cino and Eroica specifically in mind. Overkill for Eroica, but prolly perfect for Cino.
650 X 44 Compass tires, 48-36-24 triple with an 11-34 ten speed cassette, 6207 friction shifters.

Like riding on a cloud surrounded by unicorns farting rainbows...

2019 Cino is definitely not in the cards for me. On the other hand, 2020 is a very real possibility. And since there is a bit more flexibility in the Cino bike rules as compared to the Eroica bike rules, I have more options in what bike to bring. Decisions, decisions . . . . .

I am seriously debating this although it's not my normal kind of riding. Still I haven't got my usual annual trip to Glacier even set up this year so maybe this can replace that. By coincidence, or fate, the same day I first read this post a really sweet Rando bike showed up for sale. It needs some work but right now has 700 x 32 on it and looks to have room to spare. Hmmm....

Wow, that bike is amazing - the paint job! The full DA kit!!

Hitting up Glacier is a great add-on to the ride, it is bucket list worthy for anyone interested.

If we don’t see you this year, we’ll see you next year!

Bump - and an ask.

I'm flying in Friday night, flying out Monday. Anybody want to share a hotel room in Kalispell those two nights?

Also, who's camping at the Hot Springs?

PM sent. Recently acquired a PX10 with fat(well 32's) Compass tires, been riding a lot of late trying to get beyond wife's passing in June. Not sure I want to roll with the PX10's 52/48 crank & 13/24 FW, but have been surprised to climb right up some long/steep hills in a 48/24 combo. I have a few other suitable bikes with triple cranks though. Don

That will be a challenge, or possibly an opportunity to stretch your legs and walk some sections.

I’m very sorry to hear about your wife. Our thoughts will be with you.

You're a better man than I, Gunga Din. To be happy on this route, I'm looking for a bailout gear not a lot higher than 30 gear inches. 42/34 was my bottom end when I rode it a couple years ago and it worked very well; I didn't have to get off and walk on the bad parts. I think I was in pretty good shape then, too. Not like now.

This year's Cino is going to be a bit a bereavement tour for me, as well. My favorite drunk uncle passed in April, my favorite gay drunk uncle passed two weeks ago and then my mother just last Thursday. Yes, they were all over 80 years old and in failing health for quite some time, so, not a great shock, but Jeez Louise! An entire generation gone in a couple months. Also, I'm officially out of a job after Labor Day. The business I've been running for the last 15 years is closing down, building to be demolished starting after Sep 15. An eventful summer, to say the least.

I'd better get my ass over to Montana this September, just for a breather.
