I set off two weeks from tomorrow, on a tour across Ohio. On a bike I will see for the first time the night before I leave. Bought off the Ebay/Craigslist thread. My facilitator has been storing it since October. A 1980 Trek 414. I have no intent to hijack this thread. Carry on without me.

There's a bike tourist blues song somewhere in that quote.

Congrats! My envy of you runs strong tonight. Right now, you are free. Enjoy, savor every moment.

I used to tour on my Bob Jackson race bike. I installed a Blackburn rear rack using their dropout adapters (no eyelets on race bikes). That carried compact Bellweather (?) panniers, a tent and sleeping bag. I had a good sized handlebar bag, too.

I had no credit card (or any significant amount of money). I would bathe when I got to a State camp site or just jump in the river. $40 motel - that is DEEE-lux!

How are your legs, back and buns holding out? Three consecutive days of 60 miles can take a toll if you are not conditioned to it, especially on a loaded bike, even on flat terrain.

Ok, a question. I'm planning a bit of bike packing/touring so am sorting out my gear and how to load my '87 Voyageur. I have the list as minimal as I can get it and the total weigh is still "impressive".

Do do you have a good idea of what your total packed bike weight is? Over your 3 days does it matter? 50 to 60 miles per day seems pretty achievable. Oh, a bit of envy here regarding the Bob Jackson.

The Mississippi looks full--- as do your Brooks panniers! Great work, especially this time of year when winter can still blow back in from Canada or tornadoes can pop-up out of Texas. Safe journey back home to Peoria.

Speaking of "blues" C&Ver @jimmuller could easily write a Bluegrass song about your adventure!

the variability of the weather made me pack heavier.

that reminds me... did you get caught in the snow on Sunday? Weird stuff. Peoria got about 3" or so.

I grew up in that area of Iowa, and enjoy getting back there. The riding along the Mississippi can be quite nice.

Good going! I don't think I am the only one that envies you! I am 64 and dream of the time when I can tour the pacific northwest on bike. I will probably fix up one of my vintage road bikes for touring and do it! At this point of my life , I see light at the end of the tunnel , I just hope it ain't a train. Bravo!
Is the handlebar-mounted coffee cup the secret to touring success in less-than-perfect weather?
