92 Stumpjumper resto-mod

92 Stumpjumper I picked up from the original owners. Been through all three sons, travelled across the country was even stolen shortly after it was bought and returned to the family by the police. I picked it up this June cleaned it up a bit and fell in love after the first ride. It just fits. Seats shot paints rough but rides smooth and only bits of superficial rust.

In riding condition for summer

I subbed in some bullmoose bars and dropped the two smaller chainrings to run as a 1x7. Tires were pretty split and I managed to get a hold of some skinwalls 2.3 front and 2.15 rear. I sourced a used B17 that fits me like a glove. Original seatpost was badly scratched so I switched it out for a Kalloy that was on my Marin Bear Valley. Looks rough but I feel like a champ riding it.

Winters coming

As winter is coming and my riding coming to an end it’s time to get it ripped apart. I measure for the placement of my replacement decals and take photos of the parts somInget them back together

Good stuff - a very worthy subject for a complete overhaul.
Is your plan to Powdercoat it, or wet paint?

Paints on!

Paint was super easy to work with.

That Kieren in the sun is subtle but so awesome. Really just enough to add some wow but not distracting not sure how to explain it.

Nice. Good on ya for doing this. I've wondered how decals work with spray.bike paint.

I bought a Trek 970 over the summer and did a drop bar conversion on it...added 2 inch street tires.. I've never fallen for a bike so fast. It's fun to ride..and fast too.

As she sits

As I wait for decals I through the bars and wheels on just so I could hang the bike n
back in storage out of the way. Spray.bike has a Blackfriars Clear that I could use to do a front to back darkening type fade sort of like the original paint did. I really like the way it is now but wonder if the fade would look better? Your guys thoughts on that would be appreciated. Sitting around always makes we want to do more. Apparently that particular colour won’t be available here in Canada for a couple more months. Won’t be riding again until April likely so not really in a rush just impatient type person lol.

Not my picture or bike, this is one lifted from the net. This is what the bike would have looked like new.

That looks great so far. I have a couple road bikes with some Kerin clear coat- a black frame with green Kerin flake and a powder blue with red Kerin flake- I like the subtlety of the flake clear coat.

One of my kids has a mountain bike that we spray.bike painted and its for sure scratched easier than wet paint or powdercoat, but we knew that ahead of time and with some of the stuff she has done(gone over the top of mtb trail berms into thorn bushes, hit trail logs, and inexplicably tipped over countless times while standing still in the driveway) would have scratched any style of bike paint.

I like the color of the decals you are adding. The original pink color would have been difficult to see with the frame color. The gold decals will stand out more for sure.

Very nice. I have the same bike in yellow that I've been slowly rebuilding. The cold weather flowing into Iowa will get me motivated to finish it though as my garage will soon turn into a deep freeze.

There were a lot of paint scratches on mine that I've touched up. It doesn't look great but it is very serviceable. I've been tempted to pick up those Maxxis tires for my bike as well. The first pic is how I found the bike in the wild. The bike had a lot of grime and a fair amount of missing paint but was otherwise sound. The second picture is where I am, more or less, on the build.

I like the black tires on that bike, ties in well with the letters on the sidewalk and the saddle.

Nice work on the bike so far. My son has a Bridgestone MB-2 at college right now that looks like your "before" pictures. After he graduates, I want to refurb it as well. I took a lot of the nice parts off when he left to make it less attractive to thieves and vandals and also to be more weather resistant.

yes isn’t it sad we live in such a workd. I’m already realizing that I probably won’t be wanting to leave this one out of my sight when I’m out n about. I would love to have an MB-1 in the white n grey colour scheme.

I have a 92 purple exactly like that. It had virtually no use when I picked it up I really can’t bring myself to do anything to it.

Well then it’s a good thing you don’t have to do anything to it. Ride and enjoy.

If I had one that was mint I wouldn’t mess with it either. Mine however was too marked up to leave the way it was. Plus I really enjoy restoring them and seeing the old become new again. Whether as original or just a redo like this one.
