Long story short, I wanted to get a 7 speed cassette for a 126 shimano 105 hub. I searched ebay and found a "SHIMANO XT HG 90 Hyperglide 7 sp cassette 14 - 32 New". I thought that like modern xt cassettes, it would have a lightweight carrier for the large cogs but when it arrives, that is not the case and the thing weighs a ton. I now recognize that maybe they didn't have that alloy carrier in the earlier models, but I'm having trouble finding info on this...

Anyway, what can I look for to confirm that it is or isn't an 'hg-90' or 'xt' cassette, as opposed to a hg70 in an old box.

HG90 cogs were chrome-plated and had a sticker on the lockring. HG70 cogs were nickel-plated. HG50 cogs were unplated black/brown. That's it.

man, I was kind of hoping it was an hg70 so I could feel good about complaining and returning it I guess I'll hang on to it then. I kind of wish I'd just gone with the 8 of 9 on 7 plan which was my backup. Thanks for the reply.

The aluminum spider in in XT cassettes started with the CS-M737 I think (around 1994 or so). I think the CS-HGxx are standard cassettes with different plating (as mentioned previously).
