Will 50mm fenders fit?

Hi.

I have an old Raleigh RRA frame i'm building a classic looking Randonneur/Light touring bike of as a winter project. Now i've come to the choice of fenders but i'm having a hard time picking the right width.

Fitted with 700/32c tyres on the photo and the choice lies between 40 and 50mm Gilles Berthoud stainless fenders. VO 45mm fenders could possible work too. Do you think a pair of Berthoud 50mm fenders would fit on this frame?

Thanks

If you are going with 32c tires, then I would go with 40mm fenders as a minimum. An 18mm difference between the tire and 50mm fender may look odd. Why don't you measure out the brake bridge clearance and brake arm clearance?

I'll try on 35-40mm tyres to see if that will work if i get the 50mm fenders.

I'm also a bit lost on one thing. Do the fenders go in between the chainstays? Where you fasten it to the little bridge down there, or can you fasten it in some way that it ends above the chainstays, if you know what i mean. The clearance there is just ~30mm.

Are you saying there's only 30mm between the chainstays?
Otherwise I'd guess that 42mm fenders are the widest that will fit between the chainstays/caliper brakes.
32mm tires may be as wide as you can go aswell.

Be sure to try the tires, fenders and brakes together before committing if possible.

SKS Bluemels come in Silver 42, 45 and 53mm.

I'm basing this on similar frames I've owned, but not identical to yours

You don't need to fit the fenders between the chain stays, it can sit above them. You may have to alter/fabricate a bracket to secure it. You do need to measure between the seat stays or remove part of an oversize fender where it passes between them.

Sometimes fenders are tapered near the end to fit between the chainstays.

Just in front of the chainstay bridge, of course. Too tight for a 50mm fender (probably). I'll try to solve that with a p-clamp.

I will try on some 35-40c tyres to see if they fit. If they do i'll probably get a pair of 50mm fenders. If the fenders wouldn't fit i'll probably make them do anyways

I'f 32c is the maximum width of tyres i can use in this frame i'll just get a pair of 40mm fenders and everything's good. I don't think this frame was made for the use of the tyre size i want it to work with

I might have to get me one of those 650b frames.

Psee: Any minor interference of the fenders with the frame can be easily dealt with by using a pair of sharp snips or a Dremel.
