Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I had that question yesterday when I was finishing off my bike (first fully fixed build). I put it on as tight as I could but... doubts. So, I got a friend who's built like a gorilla to tighten both the cog and the lockring. Then we went and attacked a the biggest available hill, checking the lockring for tightness at the top. I went down really slow, tried a few skids and watched out for slippage. All fine. I don't see what more anyone can do.

Find a friendly gorilla.

Not always the best solution. Over-torquing your cog and lockring can damage your hub too.

Yeah, not an actual gorilla...

The friend I had tighten my cog and lockring has built lots of bikes so it seemed safter to leave it to him.
