Gaining fender clearance with longer reach Campagnolo brakes?

Boulder Bicycle has longer reach arms for Campagnlo Triomphe brakes. I have the short reach brakes on a Franken bike. The pads don't really need the extra reach but I was wondering if a wider fender would fit higher up in the long reach brakes? Thanks, Woody

I am pondering a similar question. I have two pair of shorty fendewrs I want to use and it dawned on the other day the reason they never seem to 'fit' is due to the Chorus brakes I keep trying to use. So will an older style caliper like a 600EX be wider? Reach is a issue too

Aren't the short reach and the long reach caliper arms the same shape where they attach to the center pivot bolt? I think that the only difference between them would be the length of the caliper arms.

BTW, thanks for mentioning the longer arms are available. I'd like to get two pairs to put on my Triomphe calipers so I could use them on a bike I have that needs longer brake arms. I wonder how much two pairs of those arms cost?

I haven't figured out how get accurate measurements of different calipers on bikes. The bikes all have different width rims so getting comparative widths is hard. As far as reach I may already have normal/ long reach brakes but need to figure out how to get a good number.

I think the long reach brake/fender clearance solution applies when you convert to a smaller wheel. If you are keeping your current wheels and want more clearance, look into centerpulls.

Yes, longer arms won't help unless you are moving the brake mounting point away from the wheel (aka use smaller wheels). This is the idea behind 650b conversions.

Why stick religiously to Campy? These brakes were simply not designed with fenders in mind. There are plenty of centerpull brakes (MAFAC, Weinmann, Dia Compe) that not only have more clearance, but work better than 99% of Campy sidepulls.

So to sort of bump my add on question, will a pair of 600EX sttyle brakes allow enough clearance for a pair of narrow ESGE 'shorty' fenders?

This is like BB spindle fitting, hunt and peck, test fit, fiddle about and hope you get lucky before you lose your mind. tires and the shape of the caliper will have far more to do with it than the reach.

The frame is also a bigger factor. Here is the big Merz that I am pretty sure was built for fenders with 32's and a PX-10 that was probably not but has a ton of room for tires and fenders.

The Merz was used as an example for the new Strawberry I built but still was a huge challenge as the crowns on it were designed for 650b rando builds, not 700c builds with 32's but Dave made it happen.

Tx?

This was a huge challenge that Dave whipped on without breaking a sweat, still ruminating on if 35's will fit but I have little need for more and this is not likely to see any gravel if at all, there is very little clearance under the crown but with plenty of reach leftover there is wiggle room to work with I think.

Here's the thread.

Changing the brake reach won't by itself affect fender clearance, but it may allow you to use smaller diameter wheels (e.g. 700C if your current wheels are 27" or 650B if your current wheels are 700C) and thus increase the distance between the tire and the fender. Whether or not this will actually work for you depends on your specific frame and brakes.

Do you have a link to those long reach Triomphe brake caliper arms?

Cinelli did it all the time.

‘Long” reach Campagnolo brakes will provide a bit more room under the arch so to speak, but not tons more.
