I live in the big city. The closets rabbits are maybe 6-7 blocks away, but I do occasionally get possums and 'coons in my alley and on the wall surrounding my deck. Plus, he's a lazy fellow. He's sit by his wet food bowl and make me move it into a pile so he doesn't have to work to get it from around the edges. I sometimes tell him I am going to toss him back out on street so he can remember how hard life used to be, but then he rubs against my legs and I forgive him.

Casually Deliberate
Okay. This is fun. I have to be here at the senior center at 7am Saturday because we're having the First Annual Summer Festival and Flea Market. One of my co-workers gets to sleep in because he has a motorized wheelchair and has no way to get here because the buses don't run on the weekend. I decided this was patently unfair and I asked him if he would come over and help out at the Festival if he had transportation. (We have a similar wheelchair here so we don't have to worry about transporting his.) He said he was down for whatever. I called another co-worker who has a jeep and asked if she could give him a ride since she lives in the next town over like he does. She said yes but she didn't think he could get in and out of her car. So...
I pulled my Ford Taurus up in front of our building figuring if he could get in and out of that, he could handle the jeep. I always have newspapers and old energy drink cans and books on the floor of the passenger's side but by God, he and I were able to get him into it. She came out to watch him get out and said "I want to apologize. I really thought that was going to be a lot more difficult. I'll pick you up Saturday morning." He's not thrilled, of course, with having to get up that early but we both think it's very cool that he gets to be part of this major event supporting the center. I feel like if all I accomplish this year is getting people to see that Mike being in a wheelchair doesn't mean he can't sell lunch tickets, run the PowerPoint for speakers at Monday night dinner, or whatever else as long as he has transportation then that's huge even if it wasn't in my job description.

I can get used to this tapering thing. The hill climb I did over the weekend had me seriously considering turning around and coasting to my truck. The crit on Sunday made me happy, as my bike handling and pack comfort is better than before I broke my hip. Top ten without really working for it, because falling down was something I didn't want to do prior to an out of town race.
An hour Z1 on the TT bike tonight, 30/30's tomorrow night, another hour on the TT bike on Thursday, and hopefully my legs will be cracklin' for the TT on Friday. TT will be openers for the crit on Saturday, which will be openers for the RR on Sunday.
Yay Bikes!

Too bad. Maybe that's why they don't make them.

Waiting for my train home, this guy strikes up a conversation with me. Normally I don't talk to people I don't know, but he's an old guy, maybe homeless, and I don't want to be rude.
He asks me where I'm going & I tell him. He tells me he's going to Denver, CO on a train. He pulls a scrap a newspaper out of his pocket and shows it to me. It's a classified ad for ranch land off the grid in Northern Arizona. $196/mo payment. He's gonna check it out.
Maybe he'll get some goats. You can sell goat milk for $18/gallon these days. Or he might raise cockatiels. He had a cockatiel for 17 years. His name was King Arthur and he bred him to Gwenivere, they had a son named Arnie. Cockatiels are the easiest bird to breed.
He asks me my name and I tell him Heathpack & he tells me he once worked with a girl named Heathpack at the Pizza Hut in Parker, Colorado. Nice girl, he liked her.
He wanted to know which direction I was going so I told him north. He figured we must get lots of snow in winter. He was disappointed when I told him "not that far north".
He swam in the ocean twice in his life. Once in San Francisco and once in Laguna Beach. The water was much warmer in Laguna Beach.
He has a bike but he was thinking of getting a scooter. He gets $810/mo social security and he thinks he could rent his mobile home in Parker for $1200/mo. He figures he could get the goats and maybe the cockatiels and the ranch in Arizona and still be able to swing the scooter.
He wonders what towns he'll go through on the train to Denver, asks me if I know. I'm not sure, I speculate Phoenix. He asks if I think maybe they'll go through New Mexico, he'd like to do that. I tell him probably not, New Mexico would be out of the way I think. That's too bad, he says, he wouldn't mind checking out New Mexico.
Lol, then my train came and I wished him luck. Glad I talked to him. The guys a dreamer.

Worlds tonight.
Missed the start (I was fooling around) so I had to chase the field for half a lap. No big deal, they were going slow. Dangled about at the back playing it cool. Missed the break. Tried to bridge to the break four laps too late since I was at the back. Failed miserably. Attached myself to the end of the pack as they flew past me after killing myself for a few laps in no man's land. Survived for a few laps. Got myself to third wheel for the last lap (break was long gone, maybe they lapped us, don't even know) by pushing an old man out of the way (he deserved it, he droped me on the hills on Sunday.) Launched my 'sprint' about fifty miles too early and completely ran out of gas about 49 miles from the finish. Acted as road furniture as the whole field passed me. Came in at the wrong end of the pack.
Has it been mentioned in here that I suck at this?
