I think they are counting on the majority to observe the spirit of the rule. I agree 5.2 miles isn’t going to make any difference, and it’s hard to see the harm in a run out to the coast. It’s also ambiguous if visitors from outside the county can ride here without limit Or can SMC residents drive outside the county to ride unlimited. It may be an overreaction, but safer to go this way and relax later. I have heard of a friend of a friend who is in a hospital in SoCal due to a gravel ride spill, so it does happen and one of the last places I’d want to be these days is in a hospital.

As an additional note, all MidPen Open Space parks are closed to cyclists now.

Definitely safer than sorry. I was about to give in and do a road ride (which I NEVER do. Only MUP for me) but after I heard of that 5 mile then the masks, it's not worth it. I'll suck it up on my boring trainer until this all ends.

When did this start? I rode up to Skyline Ridge yesterday and didn't see any signs that bikes weren't allowed there.

From the website:

”At this time, preserve access is for hiking and walking only, leave bicycles and horses at home. We ask for your cooperation, at this time we do not have the resources to post this as a closure.”

Scroll down to "What Activities Are Allowed", then click on "Is Recreational Biking Okay".

And here's a link to a website where you can draw a 5-mile radius around your house.
https://www.mapdevelopers.com/draw-circle-tool.php
If you think 5 miles is bad, Ireland have a 2km radius. and there's a website especially for it. https://2kmfromhome.com/

I've seen some very creative ride routes on Strava the past couple of weeks.

How would they know you ventured beyond your assigned limit, stop everyone and ask for I.D. with an address?

It seems they're stopping people at checkpoints. From what I've heard they haven't been stopping people randomly on the streets in cities like Dublin, but if you're out in the Wicklow mountains 20 miles from anyone's house, you're easy pickings;

Gardaí stop cyclists who were out riding 50km from their homes - Sticky Bottle

Of the tweets from the police, my favourite on that page has to be;

"Gardaí in from DMR carrying out a checkpoint in Cabra this evening stopped the driver of this car. It transpired that they had

No tax
No insurance
No driving licence
No NCT
False name
Positive for cocaine

As a result they now have court in the morning.#StayAtHome"

A big test this weekend for cyclists on Diablo. First nice weekend in a while, and roads closed to cars. I really hope there is not a mass of riders who decide to come up all at once this weekend, because that could trigger closures to bicycling. And for God's sake, NO GROUPS!

We rode our usual Winters loop today: two tandems, five half-bikes. All the local parks are closed (because people want to congregate, esp. this weekend). We saw several sheriff's vehicles and we all smiled and waved. Four or five of us had masks and we were all at least ten feet apart. Nobody likes not drafting a tandem, but we all want to be safe. Grateful that we don't have the 5 mile radius in effect.

There were a lot of riders Saturday even though the weather wasn't that great (FOG!)
There also seemed to be a lot of folks who would normally not have attempted Diablo d/t traffic...good thing.

Scott, your picture didn't come through, were people at least pretending to follow social distancing restrictions? I keep seeing groups (albeit mostly 2-3) everywhere I ride. All it takes is a few people who already don't like cyclists to start tweeting pictures of large groups or contacting their local politicians to ruin it for everyone. I don't understand why people think rules don't apply to them...

My GF went up Saturday, and yes, the weather guessers got it all wrong again...thankfully it was pretty gray and gloomy all weekend, that might have kept the numbers down a bit. Hope we get to the backside of this curve and Newsom starts easing back a bit before these selfish people who can't manage to follow rules (not just cyclists) cause further tightening of restrictions...

Thanks for the update. I haven't been up the mountain for a while, but admit it would be a nicer ride without some of the angry drivers who are in a rush to get up the mountain and back down.

Another parent at my kid's school was unloading his bike from his car (likely a big red flag), along with his friend. A cop pulled up and asked for their licenses. My friend was 4.72 miles from home, but his friend was beyond his 5-mile radius and was hit with a $1,000 fine. Of course, they moved the San Mateo County limit to 10-miles today, so at least that opens up more road.

Cool, I hadn't heard about the easing of the restriction from 5 to 10 miles. Here's the revised orders confirming that if anyone is interested:
https://www.smcgov.org/sites/smcgov....20May%2031.pdf

Interesting how they are reopening some parks, but the Crystal Springs recreational trail (Sawyer Camp Trail) will be opening for foot traffic only. When they initially shut it down, the crowds of people on foot were definitely the problem... whatever, I have no interest in wading through the crowds there any time soon anyway!
https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/artic...s-15234634.php

And wow, thanks for the heads-up about that $1000 ticket. Jeepers.

What does the public's inability to follow rules have to do with removing the governor? It's pretty easy, DON'T CONGREGATE. For some, unlearnable.

Believe what you want. The governor is overreaching and has been using fear to get people to shelter in place. So if you like what you have, do nothing. There are options.

I've been social distancing, wearing a mask when I go to stores, and staying close to home...

... and yet the quote plays in my head with the words "Papers Please" in a German accent.

I saw that article too. But when you go to the Mt Diablo webpage it says the park is still open for locals who ride/walk to the park.
