Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I recommend the CX238's highly. I can't think of anything that'll turn a ride into an exercise in masochism faster than an ill fitting pair of shoes. And with my messed up feet, it was becoming a way of life. The only shoes that even came close to the Lakes was an old pair of Specialized S-works that were made of Kangaroo leather. Those got trashed in a moving accident, and Specialized no longer makes them. I've been suffering ever since. In any case, the Lakes are even better and not too spendy.

I've got some Lake 237s - they're fantastic and they've been very popular for Lake - and the 238s are supposedly built upon them with a handful of small improvements, so they should be winners, 'specially for those with wider feet.

So I just got home from picking a pair up at the LBS. They are super comfortable as far as trying them on so hopefully they help with the outside foot pain I’ve been having with my RC7s. My right foot has been bugging me and changing cleat positions hasn’t helped. I didn’t find the RC7s all that comfortable although many people love them. It felt really weird to buy shoes that are so expensive, that don’t look all that great lol. Not a fan of how the 238s look.

Did you change the footbeds out?

A Cervelo Aspero. It was the Apex 1 model, but I'm only keeping the frame. It was also cheaper than buying just the frameset

It's been a very expensive past couple of weeks...

I've bought a lot of parts for my daughters Cannondale to get it back in good working order, and everything is taking forever to ship and arrive. Nothing lately has come on time. I know they are all swamped, but even the mom and pop stores online? I have something with a "shipped" status that is still waiting for the goods to be actually shipped for 10 days now. I'd cancel the order but it is like that everywhere.

Centaur 12-30 10sp cassette and Veloce medium cage 10 sp derailleur for my Battaglin MAX bike - it'll never be a mountain goat, but this should make it a little bit easier on the aging knees.

This is something I may need to do someday, except that NYC is mostly just flat. I currently ride a 13-26 cassette with my Chorus 10sp. There are only a handful of hills I even go to my small ring on, and yesterday I found one of them. The Bayonne Bridge is a 5% grade, and a long one too. Usually I don't go to the small ring on bridges but I had to do it yesterday.

I'm going to try this again when it gets cooler, it was too hot to complete the ride, which was to include the Goethals Bridge as well. I turned around at the top of the Bayonne Bridge so I wouldn't have to do the climb again.

Between the hills around here and my weight, I use every dang gear I can lay my hands on. In this case, the Battaglin already has a 12-27, but since it's my best descending bike, I want to take it up climbs without as much suffering.

I rented a bike in SF that had 12-34 and 50/34, having the very low gear came in handy on the SF hills. We don't have anything like that here.

Excited to find this Scott Addict 10. Owned an Addict R1 years ago and loved it. Unfortunately, so did my son. Ugraded, or changed out depending on your point of view, the stem, bars, seat, and wheelset. The wheelset is somewhat of a trial. Atomik carbon tubeless with the Berd (polypropylene) spokes. So far really enjoying the performance with the added benefit of attenuating the rough patches.
