Raliegh SB1799 Team Issue repaint

I am in progress of painting Raliegh Team Issue frame #SB1799 and I have a question for some that has a TI.

What are the measure of the black and yellow bands?

Thanks!

A few quick measurements...

1. the black section is 7 5/16" long

2. the lower yellow section is about 49mm long.

3. The little black/white/black band that hides the red/yellow boundary is about 5 or 6mm wide.

4. On my 60cm frame, the lower yellow section starts about 6.5" above the top of the BB shell

5. the upper edge of the upper yellow section is about 4.25" below the top of the seat lug (on a 60cm frame)

steelbikeguy, just out of curiosity, what are the criteria for switching between imperial and metric measurements?

Thank you! I had to look that up. I assume that, as long as the OP is not taking that Ilkeston vessel into outer space, he'll be fine.

to be honest, I generally default to metric, but the 6" calipers just weren't going to work for some of that stuff.
Looking back on it, it appears that the band dimensions were based on inches, which seems reasonable for the early 80's in an English bike factory.

I'm also assuming that the C&V crowd can convert from mm to inches and back with hardly a moment's hesitation.

True. After 10 years of membership of this forum I now know that I'm 6'1", have a 35" inseam, and ride a 25" bike, weighing 22.05 lbs.

Wasn't there a Mars probe that didn't quite get to Mars for that same problem with units? ".... oops..."

there's a reason why good engineers are rather "detail oriented", a.k.a. "anal retentive".

The guy who owns this website has performed probably the most detailed evaluation from analysis of more than 800 SBDU frames. The size, type and placement of decals changed over the years, including the seat tube bands.

SBDU Ilkeston SB Frame Transfer Layout and Lug Detailing for TI-Raleigh Restorations (1974 – 1983)

https://raleigh-sb4059.com/2018/01/06/sbdu-ilkeston-sb-frame-transfer-layout-and-lug-detailing-for-ti-raleigh-restorations-1974-1983/

An example of the differences:

Even though you didn't ask about the top tube decal, and maybe you already know this, but your bike is from 1977 and the top tube decal should read "Team Raleigh" rather than "Team" as shown in the first photo posted. The down tube transfer is also different I believe but Neil's website should have every detail you need if you're that way inclined.

Good luck with the restoration. I'd love to be doing what you're doing.

Omg, raleigh-sb4059.com is a firehose of information. @old_dreams thanks for posting.

By any measure I've made some progress, I primed with grey 2k epoxy, did a couple of spots of fill with J&B weld. Then I did a second coat of epoxy prime, this time beige. I then masked for the black, and painted. The black paint is 2k epoxy flat black hotrod.

I did go the the local paint outlet and had a match of the red mixed, I've got a full quart of that with a quart of reducer so I've got enough paint of a couple of frames+. To go along with the red I got a can of 2 stage clear coat. I haven't picked up the yellow yet.

Here is the black unmasked as well.

Nice work. I appreciate your nice lug pics. Such fine workmanship on these bikes. So are you doing the black from a rattle can, and red from a gun?

That is correct, I'll probably use the gun for the yellow as well.

Sometimes I forget I'm a highly trained graphic artist with a lithographic background. The masking above and below is the kind of hand work I used to do everyday.

Reverse masking the details is not difficult either. The detail is lightly taped over, etched here with pencil, pulled, cut just under sized, checked for fit, adjusted and placed lightly pressed on the edge to prevent seeping.

Not much more for progress, but I did get the yellow paint yesterday so I decided to mask for it. I may paint today, unfortunately I need to set up a new booth and locate my real respirator and get gun ready.
