Sealed bearings removal / service Schwinn Tempo 1987

Has anyone removed the sealed bearing cap on a Schwinn Tempo or other similar bike ?

I have heard some horror stories about the cap not fitting back in.

It sounds like there is a little sand in there. But when I spin the wheel sideways ( horizontally) the noise goes away

Here are 2 pics

App

reciate any and all help

Thank you

Remove the locknut, washers & spacers, and the cone (if you pull the axle, do it over a bowl to catch any bearings). You should now be able to pop off the dust shield with a flat screwdriver.
