Help Identifying Schwinn Sprint

Hi, I am brand new here. I hope this is the right place to post this question. I purchased an old road bike on a total whim for $75 off a guy on the side of the road. It's in pretty good shape, needs new tired but rides decent, shift through the gears fine and is overall a cool bike in my opinion. I want to be able to do some upgrades to the bike in addition to just tubes and tires (like brakes) and I think it will help to know exactly what I have. I was able to locate a couple numbers, the first number is on the front of the bike on the Schwinn logo and says "2877" and the second number I think is the serial. It is located under the pedals of the bike and is "GK703588". I looked this number up on a serial lookup tool and it gave me a bike from the 50's which I know for a fact is not correct. I am more curious if this is an imported model made by Giant or a genuine Chicago Schwinn. I like the bike either way, but how much money I spend on making it "like new" may be influenced by what it really is and again I'd like to have a bit more guidance in finding some parts for it. Thanks in advance for any help, let me know if I got a good deal or just a piece of junk lol. Unfortunately since this is my first post I cannot provide a link to pictures or pictures but I am happy to message them.

2877

287th day of a year that ends in 7. ie: 1977, 1987, 1997

In this case, 1987. Probably late enough in the year to be from the 1988 model year.

Thanks for the reply! Are you certain it would be 87 and not 77? The guy who I got it from said he thinks it was from the 70's.

One sure way to determine 70s from 80s is the seat tube on a 70s Sprint will have a bend in the seat tube above the bottom bracket. An 80s model won't.

Many people selling old bikes have no idea how old their bikes really are.

Goes doubly so if the bike is older than the seller.

Goes triply if the seller just stole the bike from in front of the local tavern.

Just kidding!

Sort of.

The Giant made Sprints were decent, I had one with quick release alloys. Maybe late 80’s. Nothing to write home about, Hi-Ten frame and fork, stamped dropouts, 6 speed freewheel, Shimano SIS indexed stem shifters, rode pretty nice. I think they’re good for commuting. It had room for a 28mm tire and fenders but I never be-fendered it.

The Giant built Schwinn's are as good or better than many of the Chicago Schwinn's in my opinion .
