I've been reading up on the textbook great novels lately, the great gatsby, slaughterhouse five, that lot
atm I'm too busy reading for a paper, but I'm trying to get through infinite jest, by David Foster Wallace. 600 pages in and love every word of it. Plus some dutch stuff too but that's not really accessible for the most of you.

I recently read "Six Wheels Northward" by Gary Bishop, it's a journal type book about Ian Hibell, John Bakewell and Of course Gary Bishop try to ride from Cape Horn South America to Cicle City Alaska. 20,000 miles of Crazy. They did this in the 60's when the roads were only planned and what they had to go through was incredible.

"A Lonely Kind of War" about USAF FAC pilot in Vietnam. Some of Sue Graftons Alphabet murders. I started "40 and Home the untold story of B 24s in the pacific" but haven't gotten far.
I read it a few years ago but "Unbroken A story of WW2 Survival" is very good. It is about Louis Zamperini and was written by Laura Hillenbrand. fabulous book. (I think I did skip a few pages of the POW camp stuff though) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Zamperini

Does anyone really want to know?
I'm currently reading Patrick O'brian's Master&Commander series for perhaps the 6th time. There are 20 and a fraction books in the series. I'm currently in The Surgeon's Mate, which is think is #6. It's like comfort food. But there are some parts you shouldn't start reading a 11:30PM unless you don't need any sleep that night.
I recently finished John Gribbin's In Search of Schroedinger's Cat and Schroedinger's Kittens and the Search For Reality.
Prior to that Amy Snyder's Hell On Two Wheels.

I've been meaning to reread Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance...
i had a nephew and a niece graduate from high school this week. neither is a reader, but like my own uncle, i hope to inspire them both to invest in the classics. i gave my nephew kosinski's short 'being there,' and my niece, salinger's 'catcher.' catcher was probably banned in her oklahoma high school, so she might at first be attracted to the naivety and language. we'll see...
me? i'm in a real slump. hope to get back on track this summer with a mingus bio, thomas mann, james jones, etc. it's always a joy to bike to the park, sit under a tree and lose myself in a good book.

I'll never forget seeing a short video from the ship's PLAT camera when at my Recruiter's office. The video was used as a tool to indoctrinate newbies into understanding what would be expected of them as part of a ship's crew.
The Navy's firefighting school was renamed after Chief Farrier, the flightdeck firefighting team chief who was directing efforts to cool the bombs that fell onto the deck from McCain's aircraft when they cooked off well before they were expected to.

Seems to be a thread of sailing books here; I'm most of the way through "Two Years Before The Mast". It's a great counterpoint to one of my all-time favorites, "The Sea Wolf".

Back to Bikes! I just finished "Major", Todd Balf's biography of Major Taylor. Some amazing stories of a 1900-ish cyclist with great track racing exploits and the spectrum of responses to the fact that he was a black man. Read the whole darned thing on my iPhone's Kindle app...
