WOW, that is a high average MPH to keep up for a trip like that (16.16MPH) My usual average is 13.43MPH and I don't carry anything on me, it's in the chase vehicle...

50.6 mph sounds scary to me.

Continental 4000sII's. They did as good as could be expected for riding shoulders. I'd use Gatorskins or the equivalent next time. The biggest issue was wires puncturing tubes through the casing. The tire rubber got chewed up and gashed pretty quickly.

Amazing, jppe! Well done, but it makes me feel really old!

I usually don't eat too much while riding. Just enough to keep from feeling hungry. Breakfast was typically eggs, French toast or hot cakes and bacon. We had our share of free hotel waffles and oatmeal. Oatmeal was added if just hot cakes or waffles.

Supper was a good sampling of food all across the US. Just about anything you can think of. We really enjoyed trying local restaurants and craft beer joints. I tried Porters wherever I could find them. Looking back most of those were out west. Deschutes Black Butte, Sinister Black, Moose Drool come to mind. But there was a good one by Great Lakes Brewing we had as well-Edmund Fitzgerald.

There are Mexican restaurants in about every small town everywhere now but we only used those as needed. My love for good margaritas still continues. I tried to limit those to once per week.

We used Google and Trip Advisor extensively to pick places to eat. Also used it to select hotels to make sure they were pet friendly. We stayed in a lot of locally owned hotels. While not 4 or 5 star joints they met our needs.....and sometimes the only thing around. We certainly paid a premium for having our dog but it was cheaper than boarding her. She was good company for my wife as well.

I'm so sorry we missed connection here in the Elyria OH area - had a vet visit scheduled for two of our 'kids' that morning. By the time I got home, and as fast as you move, you were probably already nearing Downtown Cleveland!

I envy your ability to 'take off' for such an extended time!

Sometimes I wished I had the resources to do such a ride. At my age, however, it doesn't look as if that is going to happen.

That would have been fun to have hooked up but I completely understand. People have asked me about the trip and one of the first things I mention is how Cleveland was such a pleasant surprise. Google Maps did a nice job of keeping on roads I could ride on. The areas I rode through were really quite nice. The downtown area looks great. I still wish I'd stopped and grabbed lunch in one of the restaurants. There were tons of places in a area that had been "modernized" and I was really hungry. Madison St maybe???

I certainly don't take for granted that I was extremely lucky to have the resources to have been able to do the ride in a way that was perfect for me including having my wife willing to be my SAG. When I retired I was "paid" not to work anymore so everything came together perfectly for me as far as time and resources. I had always wanted to do a long tour but work always got in the way.

Now that we're back home and spending time with our grandchild, I don't think I'll ever be able to pry my wife away long enough to do a long tour like that again. And that's the way it should be........

I have a friend that is a meticulous wheel builder and he built these for me. He does little things that in my opinion help to keep wheels rolling on and on. This set were H Plus Son rims with aero spokes and White Industry hubs. They are 30 spokes rear and 20 front. A touch over 1500 grams. He has access to high quality parts at phenomenal prices.

These wheels stood up to lots of abuse in my opinion. Lots of bumps, frost lines, expansion joints, pot holes etc. Even with the high tension spokes they rode pretty comfortably even over rougher surfaces.

I rode across Oregon on a set of Dura Ace C24 wheels but the rear tire was just worn out causing too many flats going into Boise. My wife pulled up just as I was getting ready to change a flat in Boise and I opted to just change the wheel to the H Plus Sons. I left those wheels on for the last 3000 miles.

On my Cervelo P2C I'm using FarSports 38 mm carbon rims from China. I also have that same set on my Pinarello that I ride as my every day bike back home. They are only around 1400 grams and have done really well for me. I got them fully built and delivered for under $600 a few years ago. I've been really pleased with them so far. I felt like it was worth taking a chance at that cost and so far so good.

Thanks for the reply. That's the wheels Ive been looking at with, November wheels. Pretty similar anyhow. I was also looking at the C24 as well. Its sounds like they are both pretty good wheels. Thanks again.
