The main reason why poor people on bikes who grew up in sketchy neighborhoods ride facing traffic in my city. Baseball bats, golf clubs, target practice from overtaking vehicles is fairly common here. It often goes unreported because the cyclist likely have outstanding warrants themselves.

I was not shocked by this story. Lived hearing it all my life.

with the possible exceptions of Astrology and Ayurvedic medicine, nowhere has statistics been more bastardized than in “relationships between” brain size/shape/density/color/ or whatever and this-or-that aspect of behavior. The sense of right and wrong evolves co:equally with pleasure and punishment/pain early in infancy, even in animals with intelligence well below humans, such as dogs or monkeys.

and of course it is expensive to keep guys in prison. But as they say, if you think peace is expensive, try war. Serious felonies destroy and maim lives of people who otherwise might have earned hundreds of thousand of dollars and enjoyed productive and useful lives. Their medical care and therapy often imposes private costs of hundreds of thousands of dollars, paid in large part by insurance premiums leveled on all of us. Meantime prisons have libraries, game rooms, gymnasiums, conjugal visits (even for ****-ists) ad Infinitum.

And of course the death penalty, specifically mentioned in the constitution as a punishment for certain crimes, is unconstitutional. 🤣

A mirror probably would. Of course, there is still no guarantee that he'd have time to realize what was happening and evade. Garmin Varia is a device that serves no meaningful purpose. It couldn't possibly make any difference in this case.

Basically, nothing can protect a bicyclist from a deliberate attack of this kind.

Actually there is one thing that can, but 99% of the forum member's are against it: riding against traffic instead of with traffic. You would see them speed up and swerve at you, giving you time to get out of the way. I don't say this to start the age old debate because I ride with traffic, not against it, unless there is no other option.

People who think it's safer to ride against the traffic have faulty logic. The reason why majority of cyclists are against riding against traffic is because it's stupid and dangerous to do so. Riding against the traffic isn't going to save you from some driver who is determined to run you over. You would need to have extremely fast reflexes and be extremely explosive to avoid having a vehicle run into you, good luck trying to do that. The only thing that riding against the traffic will accomplish is give you the last glimpse of your killer just before you die.

+1. No logic at all. The only time I am against the traffic is when I walk or run on streets that have no sidewalks.

Motor vehicles can be operated without a driver's license. Farm boys and girls start driving as soon as they can reach the pedals. Average age of car thieves in my city is likely around 13yo.

Their trial will not start for almost a year. I hope that both of them are prosecuted to the fullest extent of Nevada law. The longer these two are kept locked up the safer the public will be.
