What's this? Columbus steel, Italian threads, old school lugs.
I respectfully present our experts with this stripped frame to try to identify.
Might have been white originally and some 3rd removed owner claimed '1959 Cinelli'. The word Columbus and the dove stamped on tubes. Chrome headtube lugs, as well as fork crown and fork ends. Campy drops, with fender bosses. Italian BB with MV 13922 stamped, 26.8 post, 120mm rear. Some pinning on lugs. 59x58 ctc, with a 103cm wheelbase.
Have at it!

Well it's not a Cinelli. I don't think I've ever seen a nastier rear drop-out attachement using Campy drops. The crown looks sort of familair but not ringing any bells.

did you compare it to colonel lloyd's Bottecchia Professional? "Carnielli" is sort of close-sounding to "Cinelli" (if you don't know better)...and the crown and brake-bridge look molto simile to his (also all-chrome).
Edit: I just did and they sure look close!:

I see no difference in the '72 Bottechia Professional I recently acquired and this frame save the stampings under the BB. Mine has no stamping. These frames take a 27.0 post, but finding a slightly smaller size in a frame isn't uncommon, as we know. Lots of pics here for comparison.
My frame is currently curing in the paint oven (car parked in the sun), but I'm looking forward to getting it on the road soon.

So far so good. Possibly a Bottecchia Professional, you say. Is this a frame of any notoriety? As mentioned the general quality looks a little rough in places. Was this common on bikes from that era, where possibly function superseded form in an endearing way? Or is it simply a lower to middle end frame?

I'll tell you exactly what that is. It's a nice bike, that's what it is.
I don't think the dropout treatment is bad. The whole bike definitely does look Italian. Good luck with it. I look forward to seeing the results.

I claim no expertise but to me the quality of the brazing work is lackluster and sloppy, unless the play of light and shadow in the photos is deceptive. It's nice nonetheless. Nice to hear from you Jan, you must be having a busy summer.

Looking closer I see that the BB shell is different. It may or may not be a Bottecchia Professional/Giro d'Italia which, I understand, were the same frame, but I think it's a pretty good bet that it is. It's too small for you isn't it Jan?

close enough for me: it's the same frame, just a different BB shell, so probably not the same year.
Why one has a serial number and the other none? No idea.
Did Carnielli market another brand besides Bottecchia?

Looks like a Bottechia to me. My wife wants a bike that she can lock up at the pool (triathlon training) and I got extremely lucky and picked up a '72 Bottechia Pro. on the local CL for a song. It was covered in surface rust, and I figured that I could nab the NR parts (it even came with a spare NR wheelset) and rebuild the frame for her with Suntour/80s Japanese parts that I have in the stash.
So far, the only problem is that the frame cleaned up perfectly after some soaking in OA! It looks too nice to lock up outside....
Anyway, I view them as high end, mass produced frames that can be had for comparative bargain. Almost all of the ride quality of a grail bike but at a fraction of the cost.....
I'll check the bb cluster on my my wife's when I get home this evening....
Congrats!

Looks like a nice frame, even with the dropout treatment, etc.
Any significance to the 2 holes in the headtube? Screw holes for a headbadge? I haven't gone looking for Bottechia headbadges, but that might help to narrow it down, assuming they are original.
