Cool little history lesson as well. Thanks for sharing.
I used that front rack on my other TX300. I also have one on the wife’s 1984 620.

Grimy but lightly used 77 TX304

Today I saw this 1977 Trek posted on Facebook Marketplace, learned it was still available (probably because it was listed in antiques instead of bicycles!) and got it for $65. The owner bought it in Steven's Point in '77 assembled and later swapped out the drop bars and seat for the straight bars and dorky super-soft saddle. It has the Suntour Cyclone drivetrain, indicating its a TX304. I'll post more when I clean it up, though I need to finish an up an' 84 Trek 610 barn find first.

Sorry it's from a bad angle, hung on my car. SN C3K6C04 suggests it's a tx300 frame, 22,5", welded either March or November 1976. Hard to tell whether the third letter is c or o.

Don't mind the grime, that seems to protect things from oxidization. Congrats on an excellent score! 👍

Cool bikes. I love the late 70s Treks. I'm not surprised by the estimate of $500 that the bike shop gave to the OP's bike. I've seen a lot of nutty CL prices based on the estimate of a local bike shop.

Love it. And that "Jim Blackburn" front rack is ACES! That makes ANY bike look cool.

FWIW- I live in “Trek Alley,” about 50 miles from Waterloo- as the crow flies... I was looking for a TX700 for a long time- ended up getting mine from Ohio.

I bought this 78 TX300 in 2010 and rode it for a couple of years before I determined that I prefer a slightly larger frame. I brought it by a local Trek store once and the employees were blown away that it was older than anyone who worked there.
