Wheelies safe to do on a roadbike?
I have a Louis Garneau bike (Made in Canada) with very skinny 23mm tires (100 psi min/145 psi max). The tires run true.
Here is the bike below:
I was wondering if the rims could handle the drop out of the wheelie. Apparently, these rims are decent quality, but I'd rather not risk it unless I know it can be done without damage.

Personally I'd be more worried about the handlebars stabbing me, if I were to bang down hard enough to be concerned about the rims.

My handlebars are extremely strong; a few days ago I was using all my mite to bend them in a little—they didn't budge. Also, the bars are shaped in such a way, and angle, that this could not realistically happen. But, one never fully knows, so I will fill the hole in my brakeless bar for a little extra assurance; it's easy enough to do.

Yeah, it will be fine. Coming down off a wheelie isn't too rough on a wheel. Usually there's almost no weight behind it. Even if you shift your weight for whatever reason and put it down hard, that's the kind of thing wheels are made to withstand. Hitting a curb or something like that would put a lot more force against the rim.

He's quite the rider. Saw a vid of him doing a hands-free wheelie and eating a cookie whilst talking to a crowd and racing. Wouldn't surprise me if he added juggling to that.
And I suppose you'd be the clown riding it?

Actually, I work with kindergarten kids. I was thinking of showing them a couple of tricks after the long weekend ad before it gets too cold. I'll let you guys know how it goes if you're interested.

just having fun
What's up with your bike? Why are your bars flipped with a brake in a weird spot? Why not just get a bike that fits you? Must get a lot of strange looks.

With that setup, you might get a warmer response in the fixed gear freestyle forum. Emphasis on freestyle

When I was a teenager I prided myself for my wheelie skills on my Schwinn Varsity.I could ride up and down the block on one wheel. Then I got the idea to switch gears while riding the back wheel. It didn’t go as planned! I flipped that ten speed and tore myself up pretty good. The only wheelies I would do would be on a mountain bike , ten speed road bikes are not really that good for that application. Joe. joesvintageroadbikes.wordpress

Wheelies and safe are mutually exclusive!

When I was a younger man, lots younger. 39 years younger. I used to do wheelies on my Columbia 10 speed road bike all the time. Till the last one. The fork failed at the bottom of the head tube and I got to ride it to the gravel driveway, where I landed face first. A nice concusion. Road rash on the left side of my face, shoulders knees and the back of both wrists.
I dont do wheelies on non suspension bikes any more.

I used to wheelie back in the seventies as a teenager (yes, I am old) on an in-expensive department store "10 speed" with chromed steel wheels and dropped bars. I could lift into a wheelie with one hand and wave to people, take corners, etc.
I never damaged the front wheel. However, I would go through cotter pins too often.
