Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My new chinese carbon, WCB-R-066

After having my previous WCB-R-066 chewed by a bear I decided to buy a new frame instead of repairing the old one, for two reasons:
1. Repairing would take 3 weeks and I've only one bike.
2. Cost of repairing a frame is almost the same cost of a new one.

My previous frame was also a WCB-R-066 bought from an amazon/ebay store named Sobato so I already knew what to expect. I wanted a custom painted frame so I looked for inspirations on race cars for a paint scheme, nothing like a race like bike going 3 mph uphill to highlight all my freddyness... Is it even word?

I found inspiration in Gulf Racing Porsche 917K, famous for winning the 24 hours of le mahns in 1970 & 1971:

From there I worked with the Sobato sales person by doing the sketch of what I wanted, and provided the color codes for the blue and orange colors:

This is the end result:

I'm really pleased with the final result, I was a little anxious when the box arrived in seeing what would come out of the box. From a sketch to final paint, color codes to real colors, english to mandarin... a lot of opportunities for for stuff to get lost in translation. I can't wait for my BB to arrive so I can build it up.

Edit 1:
For those interested, I bought the frame from their amazon store:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DM74W6A

For both frames I worked with Julia, her email is: sales01@sobatobikes.com

Edit 2:
The whole process from order to delivery took 4 weeks, my previous frame I believe took two weeks but they told me in advance that there would be an additional turn around time due to the decals.

Man I really like that design. I really am happy for you that it came out as you wanted. How did you come up with design? I would really like to rip that off and do like dark blue and white. What program did you use to design that scheme and can you teach me how to use it? LOLOLOL

There are a few thing with my frame I may to send it back for.

First the rear break mount on MY frame seems unfinished where yours is cut out above the rear brake bolt hole as it should be just like the R5. I will attach a pic to show you to compare to your frame.

Also the mounting clip for the front derailleur has a smashed rivet. I don't think it will matter but I still think it is a problem. The more I think about it the more it BOTHERS me.

Did you order the Wheels Mfg BBRight? I thought you mentioned before but there is 2-3 of us that are all building a the same time.

- Honestly, I was pretty impressed with the guys from Sobato. you can use a whiteboard or a piece of paper to draw a bike like you want and send to them, they probably would return to you with a drawing of the bike like mine. That's what they did for the first bike. The second one I just re-used their rendering and applied the pattern how I wanted. They still sent another rendering of both sides of the bike to confirm that it was how I wanted.
Anyway, I used a free software called gimp and a lot of google "how to draw a line on gimp" and so forth
I can try to help if you draw a sketch of what you want.

Did you buy directly from workswell or alibaba? If workswell it is really odd for the frames to be different. My other frame is exactly like this, used the same vendor.
From the workswell website, it is clearly cut above the rear brake.

I did not, the blue/red bike in the background has a wheels mfg BBRight to GXP BB, but it squeks when I ride in the rain so I decided to try something else, I went with BBInfinite this time.

I was trying to get a better look @ the blue/red one. It looks like you use Speedpaly pedals. I just got my chromoly Zero's the other day.

I HAVE heard ALOT of problems with the BBRight BB's but according to rpenmanparker as long as I use the Locktite primer and adhesive it should not be an issue.

I DID buy direct from Workswell. That's what is so disappointing. Now its gonna be a battle over who's paying the shipping to have it shipped back I KNOW. We'll have to see about that.

They will pay, they shipped you the wrong frame. If anything you can involve paypal and claim product is different from the advertised or something and you will get to keep frame and money back if they don't take the frame.
Here is the viagra blue bike build

By the way. the bike is not that light blue, the bright white light makes it looks whiter than it actually is.

That's one of my all-time favorite color schemes (Gulf Racing blue/orange).

How much did the paint cost above their Amazon frame price?

Your frame looks great!

Well I email them and I HOPE they do the right thing.

BTW all you 066 owners that I sent the pics of my frame to or asked to go to my Photobucket page either A-didn't think it was enough to worry about or B-completely missed it as I did.

Haze-T: Like Wareren 128, I think the Gulf Racing colors are unparalleled. Great choice.

Clubber: I did visit your page, but now since my visit was not appreciated, I am not sure I will ever go back.

Good luck with the QC/Customer Service stuff.

Some comments about the above posts:

There really isn't such a thing as a BBright bottom bracket, only a BBright bottom bracket shell. The actual bottom bracket is just a simple pair of PF30 bearings/plastic cups just like for any other PF30 shell.

clubber, I know you are disappointed the frame isn't perfect, and you have a right to be. Nevertheless I wouldn't send it back for anything less than a catastrophic defect. There are too many ways for things to get screwed up going back to China. Jus' sayin'.

As for the cutout above the rear brake yoke, is it possible that is a size variable?

Thanks for your support, but I think I need to amplify something I said above. For a BBright shell you would use a seal sleeve between the bearings that is a bit wider than one that would be used for a 68 mm PF30 shell. Since many of these sleeves are adjustable in width anyway, BBright bottom brackets are much the same as PF30 bottom brackets.

@HazeT I hate to be that guy, but it's worth pointing out that the Gulf 917 never won Le Mans. The 917 did win 2 years in a row, but it wasn't run by the JWA/Gulf team to either of those wins. It did win a fictional Le Mans in the movie, though!

Still, bike looks amazing. Well done!

It's ok, this looks a lot better than the 2 liveries that did actually win. Now the Pink Pig 917, that would be a conversation starter if you conveyed that to a bike frame...

I should start a collection. That blue&red frame in the background is damaged and will be sent to repair & custom paint soon. I'm open to ideas

Plenty of material to choose from if you're sticking with sports car liveries

Agreed. And on a related note, I met a guy yesterday, at a local cycling hangout, that paid $2,000.00 for his custom paint job.

Custom paint is spendy. It wouldn't make sense to dump a bunch of paint money into the 066. But $55 is super and he got to have some fun with the design.

There was that Gulf CAAD a couple years ago. I'd spend my $55 that way.
