I've had a 58cm Nashbar touring bike for years and never really liked it. It just never seemed to fit right, I think it's just too big. I usually ride 56 road bikes that have top tubes around 55cm I'm going to buy a friend's almost new Breezer frame tomorrow. All I know about it is that it it's 55cm steel with carbon fork, has many mounts, disc breaks, and 142mm thru axle wheels.

I have no thru axle wheels, but I've noticed most of the wider wheels I'm finding like H+ sons are also 28 spoke count. I'm not going to alot of heavy loaded touring. Probably 25-40 pounds of gear, but I'm a portly 240 pounds right now myself.

Any recommendation wheel budget is 400 dollars.

why not get a bike with standard QR wheels?

I bet you could have some built for that much if you don't need tubeless rims (36h tubeless rims are somewhat rare and not many budget options). You can spec them out and get a price at prowheelbuilder.com or https://www.universalcycles.com/wheelkit.php

This isn't due to rims but hubs more often than not.

You could build H+SON Archetype (36h) ($73USDx2) to Shimano RS770 hubs ($110+$195) with 36h drilling, off ProWheelbuilder for probably $500usd (if you find a coupon code which are frequent). Yes I blow your budget. But you get a very dependable set of wheels built to your needs. Of course you'd still need rotors and cassette, which there go another $150 USD easily NVM tape/tires.


$400USD these days...barely gets you a set of race-day OEM factory wheels, alas.

Got my frame today, Breezer Inversion and he threw in the hydo brakes.

fietsbob, I like building my own bikes. I've only bought one bike new, and stripped the cheap parts off the frame before I ever rode it. I've got a nearly 11 speed 105 group. I'm getting a sweet frame for 150 bucks but sadly it takes thru axle wheels, but it is 2019.

My current road wheels are a DIY wheel kit from Taiwan I built up myself, for about $350 Novatec hubs, 28/32 spokes, 31mm rims. 3 years and over 10,000 miles on that bike and one broken spoke.

Both of these have quality components and 32 spokes. Just properly tension and true the wheels after a few rides and they should be great for the total riding weight.


or go to prowheelbuilder.com and select the components you want. They are hand built and really nice. I have a set from them and will get another in the next year. Tough to beat for the prices.

so many posts in this section think you need the latest components to go touring..

at the shop in this town Summer sees lots of bike tourists,

just realize .. If..

you need a custom wheel rebuild it will take a few days , as the budget will not have ready to ride
spare TA wheels..

in a small rural town , so a rim must be ordered and shipped and time set aside in the busy season ,
for the shop labor ..

Or (heavier) Mavic a319 rims for $53 each.

They'd better be cheap for a pinned and heavy rim from Mavic...I'd only pay $50 for it. Granted you can do a bit worse, Mavic did at least have the sense back 20 years ago to double eyelet that rim.
