Powder coating Cost

I hear a lot about the benefits of getting a bike powder coated. What did it cost? I am on a budget but I am interested in it as an option.

I have done a lot of powder coating to old single speeds that were more rust than color. Frame and fork ran me from $100 up. Add fenders and a chainguard, close to $200. This pricing is in Wichita, Kansas.

OK good to know. I mean its either leave it as is (so-called Rat Rod) rattle can or powder coat.

Powder will last longest and look best.
spray.bike will last second longest and look second best.
Rattle can will last shortest and look worst.


Rattle can look good, but the nature of the paint lends it to not being as durable.

If it ends up being dyi- 70% is prep. Dont skimp on prep.

I understand powder coat is best, looking for ballpark cost for powder coat. So far I have 1 estimate at $100 for frame and fork.

Here in the L.A. area, powdercoating a frame will run about $60 to $100. That includes sand blasting.

If you have pantoraphing or chrome sections you MUST make sure that they undestand not to media blast the chrome or put too thick of coaing over the panto sections ot it will not show up when completed.

Sequim, Wa - $135 blast/powdercoat (edit: this includes the required masking to make sure I wouldn't have any thread-chasing to do.) It's a completely different level from rattle can. I've done one really good job of that, but the durability is a real issue. And it took tons of time, doing it right so it looks like a professional paint job.

$100-125 is a good deal (with sandblasting). Lots of places charge more. Be prepared to chase some threads on the bottom bracket and to file a little to get the headset back in, the powder is sneaky and gets into things. Some are better than others on that I'd bet.

From an email with a powder coat shop that frequently does bikes:

"Without knowing the color or if were doing a clear or even what clear if we do it's hard to say. The cost can range from $175-$600 depending on what were doing. If we just do one coat on the frame the base price is around $175."

I've paid anywhere from $75 to around $300 for powder coating in the Boston area. There are plenty of shops that'll do it, but fewer that have experience with bicycles.

Like others have said, be SURE that the shop knows how to do bikes. I've been really lucky in finding an excellent shop right off the bat...their attention to detail was very evident. I've seen other bikes done at other shops, though, where proper masking was not done, and the bikes' owners had a helluva time cleaning powdercoat off of threaded areas, out of the bottom bracket, etc.

Tucson, $125 blast and coat, with light colors I went with a clear powder on top for another $100 and it was worth it as it is easily as nice and tougher than the 2 part urethanes or DuPont Imron I usually spec and much much tougher than spray bombs. Only downside I can see are the decal work arounds.

Oh, I should add as this is a C&V forum that lugs are difficult for run of the mill powder coaters even if they do lots of good MTB work w/o lugs due to the sharp edges. When asking about plugs for threads, etc., you might want to discuss.

thats w/out media blasting but with chemical dip.Serotta has a metallic clearcoat.no disappointments with H&H powdercoating,fenton,mich. who else can do a fade?

Here in Indy the price for me is $220 for dip, blast, and coat with curing. But the results are good and very consistent. The shop is Pro Kote Indy and they are hot rod people and take the time to do a good job. I have done at least six frames with perfect results. They mask off areas like serial numbers and size numbers and clear coat those areas before retuning the frames to me. For me it is the attention to detail and doing it right. I could not clean a frame blast it and paint it for less than $400, so the shop I use is a great way to save time and effort and get great results. Smiles, MH

JDubbs, I went to North American Powder Coating as I was told they did Andy Gilmour's P-coating when he does not wet paint. I had no problems, reasonable time frame but they they had a mishap with the clear coat and deducted the cost. Very small issue from my perspective ( a few off color speckles) and I was paying the bill. Frame is holding up as you would expect, but I am not the most careless cyclist. I still am at a loss on decals.
