Raleigh Twenty Tire Choices & AW Lube?

Just scored my first Twenty (1970) and am getting it dialed-in for gravel and asphalt use. Cool little bike! A few questions:

1. What's the maximum width tire for use? Looks like the original whitewall Raleigh tyre is a 1.6" by my measurement, it's not stamped on the side.
2. Any thoughts on using the Schwalbe Marathon 20x1.5"?
3. the Sturmey-Archer AW hub needs lubrication (for starters). What is the suggested oil for the port, and should any lube be placed into the chain shaft?

Thank you!

As I recollect 1.75" was maximum tire and it fit with stock fenders.

30 or 20 weight oil..Oil the indicator chain itself and put oil in the port, only if you want to keep the bearings lubed with grease.

AW hubs have a tendency to leak oil so in the 1950s I was told I should ad 20 weight oil every time it stopped leaking on the rim. Roger

Congrats on the R20 snag! The 1.5 size width will do fine. When using oil, make sure it is petroleum based, not plant based.

Wander on over to the C&V sub forum and show that beauty off!

Lubrication:

Gold medal - NLGI #00 semi-fluid grease in the mechanism; soap-based water-proof grease in the axle bearings and labyrinth seals.

Thanks everyone! I decided to order the 1.75's from my local shop, since I might occasionally take this classic off-road. The extra volume will assist with comfort. Might have to slightly re-adjust the fender brackets, we'll see.
'tcs' - I won't be attempting a full service of the AW hub, I will start with the 3 in One into the port and chain, and see how that works.
Here's an image for this post, swapped pedals since the one was sticking. It'll get SPDs when I ride it. A longer seat post is also on order - Thanks!

PS- it won't let me post an image yet, since I'm new to the site.

Keep it oiled and it will work just dandy.

Remember: 3 in One Motor Oil with the blue label, not 3 in One MultiPurpose Oil with the black label!
