The bike is a Proflex 455--I've been wanting to renovate a vintage mountain bike, and this is my early attempt at renovation. I intend to ride it during the winter. I have some homemade studded tires that I will put on it. Also, I changed the handlebar and stem to more comfortable ones. I am very surprised at how well it rides. When Spring arrives, I will like take more aggressive measures towards renovation.

Thankfully, both bikes came with them (elastomers) when I bought them. Only one of them was installed at the time of the photograph. The previous owner said that he paid $50 for each of them. (I paid $100 for the pair of bikes).

I picked up this '88 Schwinn Impact for a few sheckles the other day from CL...it was near my work and I picked it up during lunch...I had been looking for an old mountain bike to use as a get around town beater, and I think this will fit the bill...needs some adjustments/cables/etc, but is in overall decent shape.

Just picked this Specialized Hardrock up, From what I can tell going off of the components its a 1995, that count as Vintage?

by the way, I picked it up at the dump! hard to believe someone would toss it, the condition is great and the only thing wrong was that one of the grip shifters is cracked but doesn't effect shifting and the front derailleur was too low on the tube so it wouldn't shift, took it for a ride this afternoon and rides great.

Picked this up off of CL today, full Deore 6 speed with thumb shifters (not a big fan of them) - and a U-Brake! The price seemed pretty good, even without wheels. I threw a pair of wheels on that I had lying around (7 speed) and gave it a test spin. It weighs as much as my full suspension, 29lbs. But it is in Andes Mint condition. I am not liking the seat, that clearly is not original - I am thinking white. I don't think lighter wheels will do a whole lot. So the only decison is staying with the thumb shifters a getting a 6 speed HG freewheel or using the Alivio/STX 7 speed shifters I have and going to 7.

U brakes aren't bad for road riding; however, on singletrack they're great for clogging up and taking a walk.

Ha. I saw that the road is a nice place for them, touring bikes and such.This would be ridden on fire trails, and I am not a mud rider, so I don't think a U-Brake will give me much grief until I want to get new pads. Anyone used the Kool Stop Phat Padd? Or what new pad is recommended?

With all the rain in SoCal it was time to find something to ride in bad weather. Picked up this Univega Alpina Pro a few days ago. I think it's a '91. Tange DB tubing. It was set up as a single speed with a spacer kit and chain tensioner and worked fine but I wanted some gears. The seller included all the shifters, derailleurs, etc to do so.

I decided 1 chain ring up front was fine since it's for street only and then save some weight by using only a brake lever on the left side and no FD, etc. Came with a 36t on the middle but I found this 40t that is the biggest that will fit on the inside of the spider and clear the chain stay so it's a 1x7, 12-28 cassette. Deore components and hubs. It also came with a monster 150mm stem with not all that much rise so I found this 115mm that also had the internal cable routing and cable stop.

It's a blast to ride. Totally different from a go fast road bike. The tires are in between knobby and smooth and have kind of a snow tire noise. It's fun to skid sideways once in awhile. 27 1/2 pounds on the LBS scale.

Here is a 1985 Schwinn High Sierra that I built up from a basket case last year.



It is not all original, but most of the parts are from the mid-1980s. I have replaced the rusty chain since this photo was taken.

I can remember back in the 1980s wishing I could have rollercam brakes. Now that I have them, I can see why cantilevers won out: the rollercams are great stoppers but a pain to set up and adjust.

Rebuilt my '93 Bontrager OR Race Lite last Winter. Mix of old, older style, and new parts. Had the frame powder coated and found a guy who made reproduction frame decals. This thing is a lot of fun to ride and at 21.54 lbs. makes it a rocket once again...

It's a dream! Quiet, smooth, and even after a couple dozen rides, whatever chain stretch MAY have occurred isn't noticeable!

1985(ish) Ross Mt. Something. I could never nail that part down -doesn't seem to match any of the Ross Mt. bikes. Only one set of bottlecage braze-ons on the downtube.

Nice bike Amesja. If it has vertical rear dropouts, it's most likely a Mt Whitney. If they're horizontal, It should be a Mt Hood.

I think because your frame is a small(19"), there is room for only one bottle cage mount.

It looks like there are mounts for a shoulder strap. Can you post a drive side photo?

Edit: Most probably a Mt Hood due to the curved chain-stays.

19 inch frame. Shimano ER Shifters. and Shimano Deore-looking deraileurs look like the Stag-head units but have mountains on them instead. Dia-Comp brakes and levers, Sakae CR 180mm cranks, SR bear-trap pedals.
