Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Thoughts on these wheels

Kinlin 270, M5 hubs, CX ray spokes (20 front/24 rear) at about 1320 g for the set (without strips and skewers) for $695.00. I'm looking for a lightweight and dependable set. Likin Bikin has these on sale. Your thoughts? Thanks.

Fulcrum 3s are better and less expensive. Buy them from a UK store. Buy beer with them money you saved.

Why do you say the Fulcrum 3s are better?

I have fulcrum 5s and I do really like them. I have a ton of miles on them and they are as smooth and true as the day I bought them. Just wondering why you'd recommend 1650 gram wheels over a set 300 grams lighter, just as deep, with a great spoke and dependable rim.

Are you comparing the Kiinlins to Fulcrums or your 5 to 3s?

For the weight I was comparing them to the fulcrum 3
https://www.fulcrumwheels.com/jspfulc...tid=4&varid=14

From my experience I was comparing them to the 5. I assume build quality is similar.

edit: I guess I wasn't really comparing them at all, but asking for your reasoning behind saying the 3 is a better wheel

I just dont see anything special about KinLin rims and yes I have read all I could find about them.
Campgnolo and Fulcrums are full of features and have a very good reputation. I have also read many positive reviews from all over the world about their products. Weight is not the only thing to consider in a wheel set.

If I were spending $700 on some wheels, this is what I'd get as of now:
https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/M...?ModelID=25007
$689.44, free postage to the US.

Or, I'd just go with hand-builts.

You can get Kinlins, CX-ray, and decent hubs for WAY less than $700.

How are Fulcrums better? What features make them better, or is a long feature list enough?

The wheels in question are made from very high quality parts and the price of $695 is very reasonable. Consider that the CX-Ray spokes are about $3-4 each and the rear hub itself is almost $400. Also consider that with the stiff and semi-aero XR-300 rim, the wheelset weight is still expected to be sub-1400g.

That's what I was trying to figure out too. I just ordered an xr-300 w/ sapim cx-ray built to a PT Pro from wheelbuilder.com. Everything I read sounds great. I know the fulcrum3s are probably very good, but for my money I'd get the kinlins if i had to choose between the two.

I have a set of 1490 gram wheels, really good bearings, 30mm rim, dt bladed spokes. F*****g noodles. Just a flexy wheel. I had the good fortune to be able to try out the older racing 1's on the weekend. Heavier, but so goddam stiff that they accelerated much much faster, and there was no discernible difference in weight, even considering the crap tires I had mounted. Stiffness is very important in a wheelset, a light wheel that isn't stiff will never be as good as a wheel 100grams heavier but with better power transfer.
