You don't need an excuse. Can't speak for crash/fall practices/preferences, but doesn't everyone mount from the non-drive side? For me, mounting from the drive side seems about as "natural" as trying to write with my left hand, or looking into a viewfinder with my left eye.

BTW, +1 above about the pressure. That sounds like a typical low pressure squirrely tire incident, not related to the studs. Happened to me on a roadie once. Tire wasn't flat, just low enough that on a left turn, I had exactly the same kind of fall. I've been running M+Gs all winter, I would guess 45 psi front and rear, everything from ice to slush to dry asphalt and concrete. No experience like this, even on typical leaning turns.

I appreciate the continued good info, everyone! I'll try bumping up my pressures 5 psi or so tomorrow and see how things go.

BTW:

Well, there's *that*... and my recent propensity for falling unexpectedly.

Thanks for posting this. I noticed that my studded tires didn't seem quite so secure going around corners. This confirms that I'm not imagining things. Do non studded knobbies have the same problem on pavement?

I'd say 90% of my winter riding is on dry pavement. The studded tires have shown very little wear, but I keep them on there, for the few stretches of icy road.

You bet! I felt a little sheepish in asking, but I dug through the Winter Cycling past and a couple other searches didn't turn up what I was hoping for.

I pumped my tires up to 30/35 for last night's club ride (which didn't end up being a ride, but I rode to the meeting place and back), and it did feel a little more secure without losing much comfort. I'll stick with that for the time being, and report any more mishaps if they happen.
