Only one snowstorm, Then, the government was shut down for a month. No job meant almost no riding. Suddenly, I was back at work, a cold snap put us into the single digits (8 F /-12 C), and the snow arrived. The studs finally went silent and the ride was soft and dreamlike. After I returned home from work, we watched the Washington Capitols win.. It's a real winter after all.

oh I remember this thread. this past winter I changed my winter bike from a hybrid to a mountain bike. also kinda weird I didn't use my road bike at all despite there being very little snow. I think because I wanted to play with the new (pre-owned) MTB

great off road with just a little snow

packed snow was the easiest to ride over

rutted snow & ice was fine

but these conditions were tough, kept breaking thru after rolling for a bit, that trail, that day, was better on XC skis

First try at winter riding, winters have become freeze thaw rollercoasters here. Roads are mixture of wet, slushy, icy, and snowy. Today was about -7C
Steve Bauer Bora with some homemade studded tires.

Rigged for Winter

I received a donor set of lightly used Nokian studded tires yesterday along with some platform pedals from a family member who no longer commutes to work. Fenders were the only remaining items needed to convert my 970 into what I hope to be a reliable winter ride. Spring is still months away but I don’t think I can hold off anymore as long as the ambient temps remain tolerable.

^^^^ Nice build, and one of the last lugged Treks. But you gotta show us some drive side. What brakes are those, BTW?

A bit of history on the bike can be found in the thread below starting at post #90 . Brakes are Shorty Ultimate cantis paired with vintage Deore XT 3 x 7 shift/brake levers that replaced the stock thumbies.

I’d like to put a new set of wheels on each of my bikes, whether they need it or not.

@hotbike, hi. We know each other on facebook.

Well, I'm hoping this bike serves me well this winter. I recently finished rebuilding it.

The 2017 Felt DD70 is now my only bike I ride in the heart of winter. Its harder to get speed up on dry roads but feels safe and capable in all conditions.. It's a good pack mule for a warm Thermos and some lunch. The little kitty on the bars warns others of my arrival and keeps me company.

Spiked tires. On this day there was a good coating of black ice on the roads with a light dusting of dry powder snow.

Icy roads, deeper snow. 1 degree, wind chill -10. Ice in the Mississippi River. This is about 5 miles down river rom Cairo, Illinois - Wickliffe, Kentucky.

My 1987 GT Karakoram rigid 26" mtb is still going strong in the winter beater role, set up with Nokian W240 47-559 tires, studded, with an aggressive tread. Works well on snow, ice, or dry pavement. I've been having a lot of fun with it this season.
