Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Road shoe suggestions?

So I'm in the market for a new pair of road shoes and I'm open to any and all suggestions. I really don't want to spend more than around $150. I've been looking at the specialized body geometry line and the Nike Ventoux II, which seem nice. Also, I have an uncle that works at REI so maybe I could get a pair of Shimano shoes at a bit of a discount. What do you guys think? I've got speedplay pedals and will probably avg about 100 or so miles a week when the weather's nice.

I just picked up a pair of diadora lightracer carbons from performance. they are usually 264 on sale for 150, plus i had a 10% coupon so $135!

https://www.performancebike.com/shop/...slisearch=true

AMAZING shoe. fits perfect (like a sidi in terms of sizing) is very well constructed, and light!

the diadora proracer carbon also looks great and it was a toss up for me. regular 325, on for 162.

check the coupon section of this site to see if the performance coupon is still valid.

hope that helps!

Sidi Genius..... I got my pair for 148.00, but then add 15.00 bucks for shipping, and then 6 days, to 4 weeks depending on shipping. BUT well worth it..... they are soooo comfortable!

Specialized Body Geometery are my favorites. I've tried Nike, Sidi Genius, and Shimano but in my opinion, none are as good as the specialized shoes for preventing soreness and numbness. The footbeds that come with the shoe are designed for maximum comfort.

Lots of people like Sidi genius but they didn't work on my feet at all. I could hardly even tolerate wearing them while standing and finding the right bolts for the cleats (spd-sl) was a pain.

That said, either the Sidi or Specialized would be among the most commonly mentioned shoes.

if you can get a pair of shimano's at a discount, go for the SH-R151's, they are lighter than the top end SH-R215's and they have the same carbon fiber sole.

I would spend a little extra and get so much more. I recommend the Sidi Genius or Dominator. They cost a little more, but last for a lot longer and fit much better.

If you look around you can usually find the Sidi Zeta at a discount from their usual $150. I've worn these for a year now and love 'em. Same sole as the Genius, just missing the buckle.

Just curious, how do sidi shoes fit? I am in the market for a new pair of shoes, and these look really nice.

Sidi shoes are in general a bit narrower in their fit. But they also make the Mega version which is a wider version of the shoes. The real "magic" is the loicra (sp?) upper.... nice and soft and surprisingly durable. You won't regret the Sidi purchase...

I recently bought a pair of Carnac M5's and have been very happy with them. I don't have too many miles in them yet, so I don't want to give too much of a review, but Competitive cyclist has a great price on them right now. ($159.99 compared to $250 or so)

I got turned onto Sidis by my cycling friends as they watched me go through several "brand-x" pairs of cycling shoes. When the tread peeled off my Answer mtn shoes, the sole underneath said "Shimano"...

Sidis are great; durable and well made. Italian shoes are generally well-regarded.

+1 for the SIDI ZETA... got mine for around $200 from LBS... very high quality, fits perfect, velcro stays tight, no problems, very confortable, mine still have the new shoe smell even after 250+ miles of riding... you can get the non-carbon soled sidis for under $200, but IMO is worth the upgrade... this is a great shoe!

Here are the ones I have... SIDI ZETA MESH CARBON (SILVER)

I mentioned in another thread that Sidi has half sizes that increase the toe box size without increasing the the length of the shoe. My feet are slightly wider than the typical medium width shoe but not wide enough for the wide (Mega in Sidi) sizes. Going from a 46 to a 46.5 made a big difference. You might look into it if you find the normal width Sidis a bit snug.

I've always wanted Sidi's but they just don't fit me well. So, I bought a set of Specialized Carbon Comp's for about $145 out the door at Eddy's in Fairlawn OH. They are the best fitting shoes I've ever used. Very good arch support.

Have those of you that tried carbon-soled shoes stuck with carbon? Have you noticed a huge improvement over nylon soles?

Get them now...because Cannondale controls the US distributon of Diadora and guess what brand isn't sold at Performance...

They are dumping the shoes...and then they will be sold at Cannondale dealers who opt to carry them.

If I were to get those diadoras on sale at performancebike.com, what size should I get if my shoe size is a eleven? They say get a 45.5. Thanks!
