shimming a seatpost?

i grabbed a seatpost off one bike to stick in the bike i'm fixie-upping, but the post is just a little too small and it has to be tightened allllll the way to keep it in place... my question is, is there anything that would be alright to stick in there to shim it and make it so i don't have to worry about it slipping and impaling my choad when i ride?

thats probably a bad idea, if there is play then the bottom of the post and bang back and forth putting ultra-stress on the seat tube right under the clamp and above the top tube. i've seen a (good) mountain bike frame where the seat tube sheared off right there because the seat post was just a little (like a millimeter or less) too small. probably worth getting a new post.

shimming seatposts is a somewhat common practice.

do it if you want.

I've definitely owned bikes that made use of seatpost shims. as long as the shim is made specifically for using the size seatpost you have in the size seat tube that your frame has, then there is no harm in it. The shims ive used have a small lip on them to keep it from falling deep into the seat tube when installing, so i would recommend buying a real seatpost shim, instead of trying to make one out of old beer cans.

yeah, cans have no grip. I've used one and the seatpost would rotate even when fully tightened.
