After all the hype and love for it (Frozen), I fully expected and wanted to hate it. Then I saw it and actually liked it, except for the annoying snowman.

OIn the sickness discussion, I recently read an article about training while sick. It brought up that the week after you get better, you're still not up to 100% performance wise as your body is worn out from fighting whatever sickness was going on and is still recovering from that. Something I had never thought about, but does kind of make sense.

The evidence for zinc is pretty strong, much better than for echinacea. Only downside is that it should be in the form of multiple lozenges and you need to take quite a bit for it to really work (more than what's on the package). If your stomach gets a little upset and your sense of taste nearly disappears you know you've got enough...
Zinc lozenges as cure for the common cold--a review and hypothesis. - PubMed - NCBI
Zinc lozenges slowly dissolving in the mouth over a 20-30 min period releasing adequate iZn (18 mg) used each 2h are hypothesized to shorten common colds by 6-7 days, which is a cure for the common cold. Due to inadequate lozenge iZn very few of more than 40 different brands of zinc lozenges on the US market are expected to have any effect on the duration or severity of common colds.
Reduction in duration of common colds by zinc gluconate lozenges in... - PubMed - NCBI
One 23-mg zinc lozenge or matched placebo was dissolved in the mouth every 2 wakeful h after an initial double dose....Side effects or complaints were usually minor and consisted mainly of objectionable taste and mouth irritation. Zinc lozenges shortened the average duration of common colds by about 7 days

A lingering sore throat has now been joined by a mild occasional cough. And a recovery week is 4 days away.
Should prolly stay off the bike and rest today, I guess. Oh, and pick up some zinc.

Happy birthday, and in all seriousness I snagged my powertap wheelset with head unit for $640 on performance back in august...keep your eyes peeled, they have awesome deals from time to time.

How'd you get around the "emergency personnel only" travel ban? Or more importantly how did your boss get around it when you were required to go in? Or was it more like that there was something that just needed doing? When I was in Boston, I occasionally did some collaborations with MGH and my boss was sure to get me an ID from them so that I could flash that if I had to get to work (as if anyone actually cared).

I find at some point being worn down from training feels basically indistinguishable from being sick, but when due to training the symptoms will clear themselves away with a good night's sleep and paying attention to good nutrition. Not saying you should push through it, but who knows.

It's hard to understand how some of you regularly ride at night. I didn't get dinner until 830, had trouble getting to sleep, and couldn't get myself out of bed to ride this morning. Stuck riding tonight as well now.

edit: also that feeling happens mayyyyyybe once per training block or every other training block if even that often, it's a pretty rare thing but it does happen.

Idk, a good night's sleep (like 10-12 hours) does wonders when I'm sick as well as tired from training. Unfortunately, it isn't often that I can get more than 8 hours.

Heh...keep in mind that it's not uncommon for me to be running a tsb higher than -40 since I'm still building like crazy, and that my ctl at this point is 85ish. I think a lot of it has to do with the cold air and rock salt dust in the air as well, but who knows.

.....
14000kjs/week and you're ctl is 85? your training numbers do not align like any I've ever seen before.

Building from a constant (like for years) ctl of ~30-40 up until like October 1. Inconsistent training is the devil, even if you do have a decent amount of natural talent.

Due to Junior I wake up at 6:30 or so, 7:00 is really late, and right now he's having nightmares or something so even on a late night he'll need a bit of a rescue.
Last night I rode about 10-11 PM (tired so didn't ride more, but I've finished rides at 1-2 AM recently). At 11:45 PM he started crying. When I opened his door he was trying to climb out of bed, shaking uncontrollably, look of fear on his face. It took maybe 30-45 min for him to get to sleep.
He was up at 6:30, chipper and energetic as usual.
It seems I operate best on 7.5 hours sleep at normal fatigue levels.

I eat less when I ride at night, so it's a win-win for me. If I'm just lounging around I'm always tempted to grab another snack or something, on the bike not so much.

I might start riding in the morning more. My biggest contention is if I want to go ham at night and go another hour I can, but since I have a job there is a Cinderella time of 0620 that I have to end my ride and prep for work.
My wife travels and at least once a week I get, "Oh by the way, I'm getting up at 4:30 am". Of course I head this at 10 pm the same night....

Short rides at night are another thing. If I ride for an hour or less I am wired when I get home and end up staying up late and eating junk food while surfing the internet.

Due to work/family, if I wanted to ride at night, it'd be right before bed, and I've found that's never a good idea if I want to go to sleep without 2-3 hours of tossing/staring at the ceiling.
